I have until mid-August (4 1/2 months of studying) to take my GMAT exam for the fall and possibly October for Spring if I score badly. I am overall confused about what to study for the GMAT. I recently watched a GMAT quant review as well reading various forms that provide basic math concepts of what will be tested on the GMAT quant, and felt motivated about what I was learning until I started looking at the GMAT questions and answers. The gmat answer provided short cuts to answering these questions and overall gave the impression that these math concepts were obsolete. Its should take 2 min to solve a math problem but formulas take longer to do. I got a 230 on the official GMAT practice test and need to get at least a 550 to gain admission. Where I can start for beginners becasue everything is so foreign to me. Thank You!

The best way to increase your GMAT quant score is to work on one GMAT quant topic at a time. Each time you master a GMAT quant topic, you'll drive your expected score up a bit, and by mastering enough quant topics, you'll hit your score goal.
To master a quant topic, you first learn concepts and strategies associated with that topic, and then practice by answering questions involving that topic until you achieve high accuracy.
