Very basic question on conjunctions from manhattan foundation book The company's leadership began to falter after the board disagreed sharply over executive bonuses.
Here the 2nd clause board disagreed sharply over executive bonuses, is dependent clause, because "after" the subordinate conjunction is linked with 2nd clause. My question is why can't i read the sentence as if after is connected with 1st clause and say that 1st clause is dependent

i) The company's leadership began to falter - Independent clause ii) after the board disagreed sharply over executive bonuses - Dependent clause (using subordinating conjunction after)
