Other than giving up the registration fee, are there any consequences for failing to turn up to the test center? Will a missed appointment be shown on the score report?

I don't think there are any negative consequences for missing a GMAT Appointment.
If you are not traveling and available, you should try to make it - it is a very valuable experience, and no, do not cancel your scores. Schools don't care if you have 400 followed by 650, they just take the 650.

Can you take the test?

Try to reschedule the appointment if possible and just pay a fee.

Thanks for the responses. I've already missed the appointment - was scheduled to take it in December, but had to leave the country unexpectedly to tend to a family emergency. I've since decided to enroll in a course to brush up on a few fundamentals with the aim of sitting the exam in April.

I understand that there is no way to recoup my registration fee - but as long as a missed appointment won't reflect poorly on my score report, I'm happy.

lol yea gmac is earning a lot.
for submission of score it charges, for reschedule , retakes...a lot of money.

But best is it maintains good standards of exam.
