The notion that paperless is green is a little misguided. Servers and computers do not run on air - real electricity generated by real fossil fuels using tons of gallons of water. if these servers are housed in a data center, these need major cooling systems.
Praetorian, first, who said that paperless is green? Maybe I missed something in this thread.
oh, I was just responding to the idea of green presented in the esurance commercial.
Praet - gotcha, I forgot about the Esurance commercial. I agree that it does not make them a "green" company - but you have to start somewhere. For example:
Car companies are begining to offer alternative energy vehicles.
However,
They still offer gas-guzzling SUV's, hubrid technology requires big, heavy, nasty batties (how do we dispose of them?), Flex fuel is inefficient.
But, it is a step in the right direction.
My point is: Companies from all industries are using valuable advertising time to speak to the environmental awareness of the company and it's products/services. This seems to be a paradigm shift from years ago. It is no longer just "lowest price/highest quality" - social and environmental factors play a role in the consumers decision model. Personally, I see this paradigm shift accelerating as more and more global warming reports are issued, fossil fuel prices rise, global population rises, etc. We (MBA'rs) need to be aware of the arena we are playing in!
Thanks everyone for the great input on this thread!
