ttcaptur: I really connect with you on this as I am Almost there ... I have my 4th attempt next month and rest story is similar.... I have found empowergmat strategy a good one to keep the nerves calm and I saw a recent debrief ,which I will Share in sometime, really motivating for those facing the same problem of anxiety on the official test on each attempt...

Btw ur Verbal is stellar and just an average quant of 47+ would have helped u reach the target in ur first attempt...I would recommend taking empowergmat test it approach and tta approach to improve further. Would request EMPOWERgmatRichC to add few more points and suggestions for you.

Hi ttcaptur,

I’m sorry to hear how things have been going with your GMAT.

Assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than 640. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Thus, it’s possible that, in your preparation, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

The overall process will be to learn all about how to answer question types with which you currently aren't very comfortable and do dozens of practice questions category by category, basically driving up your score point by point. When you do dozens of questions of the same type one after the other, you learn just what it takes to get questions of that type correct consistently. If you aren't getting close to 90 percent of questions of a certain type correct, go back and seek to better understand how that type of question works, and then do more questions of that type until you get to around at least 90 percent accuracy in your training. If you get 100 percent of some sets correct, even better.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant and verbal materials, so take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses. You also may find my article with more information regarding
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT helpful.

If you’d like more specific advice on how to improve your quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach back out. Good luck!

Thank you all for the encouragement and resources. I'm slowly starting to read these stories and pick myself back up. This week off to decompress has worked wonders, and I'm feeling re-energized to start studying again and tackle the beast!

Hi ttcaptur,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day did not go as well as hoped. A 640/Q44 is still a solid Score though - and it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. That having been said, you have a big opportunity to pick up points in BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections, so retesting does make sense. I think that taking a short 'break' from your studies is a smart choice; taking a little time to not think about the GMAT should help you to clear your head. You're actually closer to a 700+ than you probably realize, but you're going to have to train to "see" (and respond to) the Exam in different ways - and that training will likely be easier if you've had a little rest first.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) Since June, how many hours did you typically study each week?
2) Can you list the exact study materials that you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) Is your overall goal score 700 or something else?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you have (or choose to purchase) the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Studies:
1) Since June, how many hours did you typically study each week?
During June through July, I studied a lot of content and material from my GMAT course. My main practice came from the OG guide and practice problems from the course. I would say it was 40 hours of in-class instruction then did outside studying for 2-3 hours each night.

After my course ended, ey routine has been pretty consistent where I study probably 2-3 hours (Tues-Fri), take a GMAT practice exam (Sat), then do an in-depth review/error log of the exam I took (Sun).

2) Can you list the exact study materials that you used so far?
I've used packets from my course, OG book, OG supplemental, all 6 official GMAT practice tests, and the official online question pack.

3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

I don't have the exact dates, but here is my cadence. For the most part, each CAT is one week spaced apart.

CAT 2: 700 (41 V 44 Q)
CAT 3: 730 (41 V 49 Q)
CAT 4: 690 (37 V 48 Q)
CAT 2 (retake): 750 (41 V 50 Q)
GMAT: 610 (37 V 39 Q)
CAT 5: 690 (37 V 48 Q)
CAT 6: 700 (39 V 47 Q)
CAT 3 (retake): 740 (40 V 50 Q)
CAT 4 (retake): 690 (37 V 47 Q)
GMAT: 640 (34 V 44 Q)

Goals:
4) Is your overall goal score 700 or something else?
My goal is 700. My super reach goal is 720+.

5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
I'm planning on applying round 1 fall 2020, so there is time.

6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
My top choice is Booth. I'm also considering Haas, Northwestern, and Fuqua.

I also have my ESR for all 3 exams. What's the best way to relay them to you?

Hi ttcaptur,

Before we discuss anything else, I would like to see your ESRs. Before you can include attachments to your posts/PMs, you need at least 5 forum posts. As of right now, you have 3 posts, so you can either post two more times and then either post your ESRs publicly or PM them directly to me OR you can email me your ESRs directly (at Rich.C@empowergmat.com). Once I've had a chance to review that data, we can discuss how you might best proceed with this next phase of your studies.
