Neither statement can contradict the other. Each statement is a legitimate "truth" so to speak.

If statement A is sufficient alone in a DS question and statement B is not sufficient alone, but statement B contradicts with the answer from statement A. What should be done?

Question: p, q, r, and s are integers such that p > q > r. What is the value of (r+s)?

1) x^4 - x^2 = (x-p)(x-q)(x-r)(x-s)
2) s<q

On the GMAT, two data sufficiency statements always provide TRUE information and these statements NEVER contradict each other or the stem.

So, as per GMAT standards this question is flawed.
