Contrary to recent speculations, no hardware store will be opening in the shopping plaza. If somebody were going to open a store there, they would already have started publicizing it. But there has been no such publicity.

Which one of the following most accurately expresses the conclusion drawn in the argument?

To find the conclusion, we have to determine which part of the argument is supported by other parts and does not itself support a further conclusion.

Analysis of the argument:

If somebody were going to open a store there, they would already have started publicizing it.

This part states a fact that is not supported by anything else.

But there has been no such publicity.

This part also states a fact that is not supported by anything else.

Contrary to recent speculations, no hardware store will be opening in the shopping plaza.

This part states a conclusion that follows from the other two statements. After all, the facts that, if somebody were going to open a store there, they would already have started publicizing it and that there has been no such publicity indicate that no hardware store will be opening.

So, we have to find an answer choice that states basically what the first sentence of the passage says.

(A) Some people have surmised that a hardware store will be opening in the shopping plaza.

The argument does mention "recent speculations."

At the same time, the fact that there have been such speculations is not supported by other facts and thus is not the conclusion.

Eliminate.

(B) A hardware store will not be opening in the shopping plaza.

This states in a simpler way the conclusion "Contrary to recent speculations, no hardware store will be opening in the shopping plaza."

So, this is the correct answer.

Keep.

(C) If somebody were going to open a hardware store in the shopping plaza, that person would already have started publicizing it.

This restates the second sentence of the passage, which conveys a fact, not a supported conclusion.

Eliminate.

(D) It would be unwise to open a hardware store in the shopping plaza.

This choice is about a topic, the wisdom of opening a hardware store, that is different from the topic of the argument.

Eliminate.

(E) There has been no publicity concerning the opening of a hardware store in the shopping plaza.

This restates the last sentence of the passage.

Even though that sentence is the last one, it doesn't state the conclusion, which can appear at any point in the passage. In this case the conclusion is stated by the first sentence rather than the last.

Eliminate.

Correct answer: B
