Contrary to the expectations of most physicists in the world, the Michelson-Morley experiment failed to prove the existence of the so-called "luminiferous ether," but they proved, rather, that it does not exist.

A. failed to prove the existence of the so-called "luminiferous ether," but they proved, rather, that it There is no clear reference of the pronoun 'they'. The only plural noun in the sentence is 'physicists' and 'they' cannot logically refer to 'physicists'
B. fails in proving the existence of the so-called "luminiferous ether," but rather proved that it Inconsistent tense. 'fails in proving' is present continuous while 'rater proved' is past
C. did not prove that the so-called "luminiferous ether" exists, but proved that they, rather, 'they', a plural pronoun is incorrectly used to refer to 'luminiferous ether'
D. does not prove that the so-called "luminiferous ether" exists, but proves instead about it 'proves instead about it' is incorrect construction

I see that letter E is the best option, but could anybody explain why "it" refers to "luminiferous ether" instead of to "Michelson-Morley" ?

Actually I wanted to mean "Michelson-Morley expirement" or couldn't be just world?

if only one noun makes sense when the pronoun is replaced by it, in that case we have only one logical antecedent for the pronoun.
