pronoun normally refer to preceding noun, which is closest to the pronoun. this rule can be used to eliminate choices which violate the rule and is considered containing ambiguous pronoun.

but pronoun can refer to following noun which is closest as is the case with choice c.

Contrary to the feminists’ hope that the advent of IT sector and the wide acceptability of equal pay for equal work has the ability to soon to achieve it, social equality is still a distant dream for most women.

(A) has the ability to soon to achieve it,
(B) could soon achieve it
(C) would be capable of its achievement soon
(D) to be able to soon achieve it
(E) soon achieving it

OA: B
OE:
A. --Has the ability – SV number agreement error.
B. Correct Choice
C. unidiomatic
D. 1. Split infinitive; 2. When you construct a sentence with a subordinate conjunction such as –that- , the clause must have a verb
E. Same as D

Hi, Can you please help me understand why 'it' in option B refers to Social Equality and 'its, in option C doesnt ?

Thanks

Sidmehra,
I never said that 'its' in C means different from 'it' in B. I just said C is unidiomatic because 'would be capable of its achievement ' is unidiomatic. We can simply say 'could achieve it' .
