Could you please do the long division for the following questions:

53/5000

A certain population of bacteria doubles every 10 minutes. If the number of bacteria in the population initially was 10^4, what was the number in the population 1 hour later?

In the question above, the word (doubles) means I multiply the 10^4 by 2 ==> that means double.

when I multiply 10^4 by 10^4 , what does this operation called if it is not doubled?

Hi mohd_int,

Each time a population doubles, you multiply the total by 2. In the first prompt, since the population is doubling every 10 minutes, then it would double 6 times over the course of 1 hour (since an hour is 60 minutes). That would make the total population at the end of the hour:

(10^4)(2)(2)(2)(2)(2)(2) = (10^4)(2^6).... this can be rewritten as (5^4)(2^4)(2^6) = (5^4)(2^10).

When you multiply a number by itself, that is called "squaring." For example:

(3)(3) = 3^2 = 9
(-5)(-5) = (-5)^2 = 25

That pattern holds true, even when you're dealing with exponents:

(10^4)(10^4) = (10^4)^2 = 10^8

You don't have to start dividing decimal every time you see decimal in fraction. Convert it into 10 multiple as in case 1: 0.0001 can be written as 1/10000 1/10^4
And you can divide 53/5000 as 53/5 giving 10.6 and then diving by 1000 = 0.0106

Solution:

For 1/0.0001, we multiply the numerator and the denominator by 10,000 and obtain 1/0.0001 = 10,000/1; so the quotient is 10,000 and the remainder is 0. If we had a denominator other than 1, we would have performed long division with the denominator as the divisor, however it’s not necessary when the denominator is 1.

For 53/5000, if you divide 53 by 5000, the quotient is 0 and the remainder is 53. If you were looking for a decimal answer, you can write 53/5000 as 53/50 * 1/100 and perform long division on 53/50. The quotient will be 1.06 and multiplying it by 1/100, we’ll get 0.0106.
