Hi,
So this is a little personal but imagine someone has a misdemeanor assault and a DUI on their record. Further imagine the assault charge can be expunged but this would require applying in Round 3 as there is a wait period before it can be expunged.
Anyone have any idea how an admissions committee would view either of these charges, are either of them fully disqualifying? Also, bearing whatever the answer to that is in mind, and advice on if I should wait until the expungement is completed to apply? Assume I have strong GPA, GRE, etc...
Thanks in advance
First and foremost, it's crucial to understand that admissions committees consider a variety of factors when evaluating applicants. While it's true that having legal issues can raise questions, it doesn't necessarily disqualify you. Each case is unique and viewed within its broader context.
To address your situation, it is generally advisable to apply once the expungement is complete. This could potentially avoid any negative impact the assault charge might have on your application. The delay to Round 3 might present other challenges given the limited number of available spots and increased competition.
On the DUI charge, admissions committees tend to look for what you've learned from the experience and how you've grown since then. Demonstrating remorse, responsibility, and positive changes could mitigate the potential adverse effect.
Finally, complete honesty and transparency are essential. If there are any legal issues in your history, it's best to disclose them upfront and address them in your application – perhaps in an optional essay.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.
