Why is it "world" and not "the world". That was the biggest issue for me here, and i'm not seeing an answer. Some of the answer explanations actually justify the answer by using "..'the' world" in their sentence, which is ironic.

Hi fireagablast, GMAT does not test on articles (a/an/the), so it is not a good idea to select/eliminate an option, based on article usage.

The sentence talks about the generic consumption of oil. It does not talk about the consumption of oil in a specific context. Hence, the omission of the article "the" is no issue.
