The following appeared as part of a promotional campaign to sell advertising space in the Daily Gazette to grocery stores in the Marston area:
“Advertising the reduced price of selected grocery items in the Daily Gazette will help you increase your sales. Consider the results of a study conducted last month. Thirty sale items from a store in downtown Marston were advertised in The Gazette for four days. Each time one or more of the 30 items was purchased, clerks asked whether the shopper had read the ad. Two-thirds of the 200 shoppers asked answered in the affirmative. Furthermore, more than half the customers who answered in the affirmative spent over $100 at the store.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
Answer:
The author assumes that by advertising reduced price of grocery items will help to increase sales. He strengthen his argument by presenting a survey which was carried out in last month. It seems that author failed to provide enough evidences to strengthen his argument. Below are the points which author should consider before stating his argument.
Firstly, the author assumes that by advertising the reduced price grocery items in their Daily Gazette, will increase the sales. Here he does not mention the reason of reduced items. There might be many reason for reduction of the price e.g. increase in inflation, change in taxation or any other economic turmoil. If there is inflation in market then why would people go for shopping? Again in inflation company spending money on advertisement that sound ironic. However this argument is not supporting direct relation with advertising its item and sales.
Secondly, the author strengthen his argument by considering last month survey. There might be chances that inflation may hit in this month or taxation rules might have changed. On top of that the current survey is based on 200 shoppers and 30 items. He does not mention anything about the nature of the items on the study was conducted upon. There might be chances that if the survey was conducted upon fashionable clothes then the result would be same for grocery items, because each shopper has different taste.
Thirdly, the author consider the survey conducted upon very few people. Based upon 200 shoppers he described the entire Marston area. Only 200 people considered and 2/3 answered affirmatively. A decision cannot be taken by considering a bunch of people for the whole area. The argument also states that, the half of these 200 people spend more than $100 while shopping. There might be chances that shoppers have shopped for other items than which where advertised in the paper.
Lastly, the Daily Gazette paper is not mention has the most selling newspaper in Marston. It might be the least selling paper. If it is so, then there might be very few readers to whom the advertisement is reached. To conclude this, the author failed to consider several facts which might have strengthen the argument and also if he might have consider the above facts instead of considering last month survey than argument have been more strong.
