Let's glance at the answer choices. A is obviously wrong.
Let's PITA (Plug In The Answers). How about C? Total distance is 36 miles. Dan drives 2/3, so 24 miles. Alice drives 12 miles. Is that a difference of 18 miles? Nope. Eliminate C.
How about D? Dan drives 30 miles. Alice drives 15. Is that a difference of 18? Nope. Eliminate D.
Getting closer; need to keep going.

When Dan had driven two thirds of the distance from their office to the meeting place, his cell phone rang.
He pulled off the road to answer the call, and Alice drove the rest of the way to the meeting place.
If Alice drove 18 fewer miles than Dan, how many miles was their office from the meeting place?

Let distance = x
Dan drives x(2/3)
so therefore Alice drive x(1/3)
Alice drives 18 miles fewer so:
A + 18 = D
or
x/3 + 18 = (2x)/3
x + 3(18) = 2x
3(18) = x
54 = x
Hence: E
