Darden Essay #1:

1. (Required) Why is an MBA a critical next step toward your short- and long-term career goals? (500 word limit)

Standard goal question, but the question asks "Why the MBA?", and not the usual "Why Us?". How should one go about this question in terms of incorporating (or not) Darden to the answer? I would believe you would have to.

Even though the question does not ask, I think you should incorporate Why Darden in your response. That will just show why Darden MBA is important for you to achieve your goals.

I applied to Darden and I can tell you for a fact that your essays in general need to be filled with why Darden - especially the Unique and Why an MBA questions....

So, should I describe a reason why I need an MBA and then cite something specific to Darden?

For example, "I need an MBA because my Accounting and Fnance skillz suck. Darden's renowned Accounting & Finance courses will help me be an elite Finance Wiz."

Right idea. Poor execution. Too generic.

I could replace any school whatsoever in there.

You need to be specific.

I.e. "Elective case based courses such as "Global Financial Markets" will provide real-world examples from which to develop 'pattern recognition' skills. Combined with my intention of taking a leadership role in the Darden Private Equity Network will establish l33t skillz upon which I can totally rock out, I know I can totally become a Finance Wizard(tm)"
