Hello and greetings from London!
Apologies in advance if I break any forum decorum (!), as this is my 1st post and I only discovered this website yesterday :-D
Anyway, niceties aside, I have a query regarding data suff q 75 in the OG 11th ed, which goes as follows:
Is rst =1?
1) rs =1
2) st =1
I answered this as C, using the following reasoning, please pick my argument apart (but be nice its a long while since I studied Math!):
if rs = 1 then r=1/s substitute this into rst = 1 giving:
1 * st = 1 or st/s = 1 cancelling s gives t = 1

then using t =1 & rs =1 rst must = 1, well I assume it must not considering the book has this down as E, but you get the drift

Welcome to this forum on behalf of everyone on this forum fresh thoughts and new patterns of thinking and different backgrounds are more than wellcomed as far as i experienced
Every one on this forum is nice helpfull and knowledgeable in his away.
For RST to be equall one we have a set of posibilities :
1) RST each is equal to one
2) two of them = -1 and the third is 1
3) two of them is the reciprocal (+VE or -VE)of each other and the third is 1 or -1
4)the product of two of them is a the receprocal of the third
ST ONE SAYS RS = 1 and we have no information about T ...INSUFF
R,S could be (-1 ,1, receprocals of each other)
ST TWO SAYS ST = 1 and we have no information about R....iNSUFF
S,T COULD BE (-1 ,1, receprocals of each other)
both together
From one R = S = -1 FROM two therfore T=-1 THUS RST NOT = 1
FROM ONE R = S =1 FROM two therfore T =1 Thus RST = 1
as long as both together are giving two different answers posibilities the answer is E

Thanks for the warm welcome and prompt response! Using your explanation I can see that due to the fact it could be 1 or -1 my argument fails.
