Hi AnujL,

Any Quant subject can show up in PS or DS, although certain categories (such as Number Properties) will show up more often in DS. With a Quant Score Goal of Q49, beyond having the necessary knowledge, you also need to know the Tactics, patterns and little 'secrets' of the Exam.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

how difficult is to get Q49 ?

Hi AnujL,

You must focus on three crucial things to get to a Q49 level in Quant.

  1. You must have a strong conceptual understanding of all the topics tested on the GMAT.
  2. You must build the skills to apply these concepts on GMAT-like questions. GMAT Quant essentially tests 6 important skills. Here is an article explaining the six process skills.
    • You must master these skills with enough practice.
  3. While doing this, you should track your improvement daily (set some targets and achieve them). And based on your performance, you should make necessary changes to your approach.

If you execute these 3 things with diligence, you can surely get to a Q49 or higher. Here is an example of a student who started at a very low Quant score (Q31) and got to a Q49 level.

By the way, what is your current mock test score in Quant?

Hi AnujL,

Q39 is not bad at all to start with. But it suggests that you must start from the basics and build a strong foundation. Then, slowly move towards building conceptual understanding and skills. If you follow a structured approach, Q39 to Q49 is surely achievable. (You can see a lot of such journeys here).

Also, try to track your improvement in terms of ability (percentile scores). Looking at plain accuracy numbers in mocks is not the best way to evaluate your performance (since the questions would be of different difficulty levels).

I wish you good luck with your Quant preparation.

how difficult is to get Q49 ?

To score Q49, you have to get at least around 75 percent of the counted quant questions on the GMAT correct. So, you have to be pretty strong in almost all areas of quant to score Q49.

So, to score Q49, work on GMAT quant topic by topic.

To work on a topic, first learn the relevant concepts and strategies, then do practice question involving that topic untimed until you achieve high accuracy, then work on answering questions involving that topic faster until you're answering them at test pace. Then, move on to the next topic, and do the same thing.

Hi AnujL

The key to scoring well on GMAT is to focusing on the right aspects. First let us understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.

How to prepare for GMAT in the right way?

Before you start preparing for any test, it's important to understand the structure of the test, what is tested on it and then prepare accordingly. In this case, GMAT is a test which focuses on your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. So, just learning the concepts and practicing questions without focusing on the right methodology will not do any good. So, I suggest you to first focus on the methodology to solve questions of a particular topic and only then move to practicing questions of that topic.

So, the right way to prepare would be to first

  • learn the concepts of a topic,
  • learn the right methodology to solve questions of that topic
  • practice a few questions of that topic to solidify your learning and then move to the nest topic
  • Repeat the process for all the topics

And working on weak areas is equally important. You move to the next topic only if you get a decent accuracy in the previous topic. If not, you revisit the concepts, fill the conceptual gaps and then move to the next topic only when you are 100% confident. There are a couple of articles which you might find helpful.

Coming to Quant, the good thing about GMAT quant is it tests only specific types of questions from each topic. Knowing how to solve those types of questions will help you solidify your learning and score well on GMAT quant.
