Data Sufficiency Math Strategy -
After winning 50% of the first 20 games it played, Team A won all the remaining games it played. What was the total number of games Team A won? FS1: Team A played 25 games altogether. FS2: Team A won 60% of all the games it played.
FS1 - Fact Statement 1, FS2 - Fact Statement 2.
Answer Choices -
A-FS1 alone is sufficient, FS2 alone is not sufficient B-FS1 alone is not sufficient, FS2 alone is sufficient C-FS1 alone is not sufficient, FS2 alone is not sufficient, But FS1 & FS2 together are sufficient D-FS1 alone is sufficient, FS2 alone is also sufficient E- FS1 alone not sufficient. FS2 alone not sufficient. FS1 & FS2 together are also not sufficient
Solution:
1) What do I need to find out? A- Total no of games won by team A
2) What do I know? A- Let the total no of games be x Therefore… 10 + (x - 20) = Games won by A
3) What else do I need to know? A Total no of games (x)
FS1 – Total no of games is equal to 25 = x Since we have the total no of games. Data is sufficient and we can knock off answer options B, C & E
Now we proceed with the next step -
FS2 – A won 60% of its total games
That implies 60% of x = 10 + (x - 20) 6x = 100 + 10x - 200 - 4x = - 100 x = 25
Now since we have the value of x, we can arrive at a single definite answer using either of the 2 fact statements. Therefore we can eliminate answer option A as well and D is the correct answer option.
