Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the number of hours a student spends playing video games per week and the student's GPA. The graph is a scatter plot with 40 points, each representing a student's self-reported weekly video game usage and GPA. Select the best answer to fill in the blanks in each of the statements based on the data shown in the graph.

The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent closest to [Dropdown Placeholder #1]% as many hours on video games as the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours.

The relationship between video game use and GPA is [Dropdown Placeholder #2].

Data Insights (DI) Quiz-II 2023 [Question #6, Date: Oct-08-2023] [Click here for Details]
.

Most number of hours spent by student on video games = 40 hours approx
Second greatest hours spent = 30 hours(approx)
Percentage= 40*100/30 = 133% => 130%(approx)

The relationship seems to be negative as the number of video game hours are increased, GPA is decreasing.

Re: Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the numbe [#permalink]
Part 1 Question: The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent closest to _____ % as many hours on video games as the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours.

The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week = spent 40 hours per week.

Aas many hours on video games as the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours = 29 hours per week.

Therefore, the translation of the question is 40 hours is closest to x% of 29.
i.e. 40 = (x/100) * 29

Solving for x we get x = 137.93 (rounding to nearest hundredth)

Hence the closest value from the list is 130.

Part 2 Question: The relationship between video game use and GPA is _______

We can clearly see from the graph that as video game hours increase the GPA decreases.

Hence, there is a negative relationship between video game hours and GPA.

Re: Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the numbe [#permalink]
i) student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week =40
hours on video games by the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours=29
Thus 40/29*100= 137.something % which is closest to 130%

ii) There is negative correlation- As the x value increases, y decreases

Re: Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the numbe [#permalink]
A. The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent closest to _____________% as many hours on video games as the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours.

The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent = 40 hours
The student who reported spending the 2nd greatest hours playing video games per week spent = 29 hours

hence, 40/29 = 1.37 = 137% (closest to 130%)

130 is the correct answer

B. The relationship between video game use and GPA is _______________

As the video game use (hours) INCREASES, the GPA DECREASES

so, negative relationship

NEGATIVE is the correct answer

Re: Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the numbe [#permalink]
Q1) Closest to 75%.
The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent 40 hours.
The student who reported the second-greatest number of hours spent ≈ 28 hours.

The percentage of the most hours that the second-greatest number of hours represents is:

(28 hours / 40 hours) * 100% = 70%

Therefore, the answer to the question is = 70% i.e. ≈ 75%

In other words, the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours spent closest to 75% as many hours on video games as the student who reported the most hours.

Q2) Negative. The relationship between the number of hours spent on video games and GPA, as described in the graph, is negative. According to the graph, as the number of hours spent on video games increases, the GPA decreases, and conversely, as the number of hours spent on video games decreases, the GPA increases. This indicates an inverse relationship between video game hours and GPA, making it a negative correlation.

Official Explanation

The answer to the first question is D. The greatest number of hours spent on video games was 40, and the second greatest was about 30. Forty is about 133% of 30.

The answer to the second question is A. GPA generally decreases as hours spent on video games increase, so the relationship between those variables is best described as negative.
