Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the number of hours a student spends playing video games per week and the student's GPA. The graph is a scatter plot with 40 points, each representing a student's self-reported weekly video game usage and GPA. Part 1 Question: The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent closest to _____ % as many hours on video games as the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours.

The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week = spent 40 hours per week.

Aas many hours on video games as the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours = 29 hours per week.

Therefore, the translation of the question is 40 hours is closest to x% of 29.
i.e. 40 = (x/100) * 29

Solving for x we get x = 137.93 (rounding to nearest hundredth)

Hence the closest value from the list is 130.

Part 2 Question: The relationship between video game use and GPA is _______

We can clearly see from the graph that as video game hours increase the GPA decreases.

Hence, there is a negative relationship between video game hours and GPA.

Thus 40/29*100= 137.something % which is closest to 130%

Q1) Closest to 75%.
The student who reported spending the most hours playing video games per week spent 40 hours.
The student who reported the second-greatest number of hours spent ≈ 28 hours.

The percentage of the most hours that the second-greatest number of hours represents is:

(28 hours / 40 hours) * 100% = 70%

Therefore, the answer to the question is = 70% i.e. ≈ 75%

In other words, the student who reported the second-greatest number of hours spent closest to 75% as many hours on video games as the student who reported the most hours.

Q2) Negative. The relationship between the number of hours spent on video games and GPA, as described in the graph, is negative. According to the graph, as the number of hours spent on video games increases, the GPA decreases, and conversely, as the number of hours spent on video games decreases, the GPA increases. This indicates an inverse relationship between video game hours and GPA, making it a negative correlation.

The answer to the first question is D. The greatest number of hours spent on video games was 40, and the second greatest was about 30. Forty is about 133% of 30.

The question asks what percent 40 hours is of about 29 hours, not by what percent 40 exceeds 29.

40/29 * 100 ≈ 138%

You should not subtract 100% and treat this as 38%. That would answer a different question: “how many percent more?” Therefore, the closest answer is 130%, not 40%.

Hi arunbhati,

You did the hard part perfectly. You read the graph right (max ≈ 40 hours, second-greatest ≈ 29 hours) and computed 40/29 ≈ 138%. So your 138% is exactly correct.

The slip is in the very last step - matching 138 to the closest option. It looks like you focused on the trailing part, "...38," and thought "38 is near 40." But the value you're placing is the whole number 138, not 38. You have to compare all of 138 against each option.

Line them up and check the distance from 138:
- To 130 - 138 - 130 = 8
- To 160 - 160 - 138 = 22
- To 75 - 138 - 75 = 63
- To 40 - 138 - 40 = 98

The smallest gap is 8, so 130 is by far the closest. The option 40 is a full 98 away - it isn't close at all. That's why the answer is 130, not 40.

Quick rehearsal to lock the habit: if your result were 162%, which option is closest - 160 or 130? Compare the whole numbers: 162 - 160 = 2 vs. 162 - 130 = 32. Clearly 160. Always match the entire figure, never just its last digits.

Answer: 130
