Passage says "Marijuana is also known to reduce intraocular pressure"

E. Use of marijuana can induce a sense of euphoria that helps glaucoma patients feel less anxious about their condition.
Euphoria not mentioned

A. Even a strict system of regulation over production and distribution of medical marijuana cannot reliably prevent the misuse of the drug.
Passage says that even some use might not be helpful to prevetn misuse. We know nothing about strict reulation

B. The decision of which medicine to use for a given medical condition is a matter best left between a patient and his or her doctor.
We have no reason to believe opponents will agree to this

C. Matters of narcotics regulation and enforcement are best addressed at the state level.
If anything, they would disagree to this because these matters are not best addrssed at state level since states approve this use

D. The use of marijuana provides no actual medical benefits for patients.
"The position of federal law enforcement agencies is that marijuana has no legitimate medical use that cannot be better served by existing legal medications" indicates that they think marijuana do provide benefits

The use of marijuana in other country is no reason for support

E. In a study of 114 cancer patients who had experienced little or no relief with at least three prescription anti-nausea drugs, 56 reported significant relief of their symptoms after using marijuana.
Yes marijuana is effective for chemotherapy as per the passage and hence if we show evidence saying that it helped them, we can support the conclusion
"It has been shown to be particularly effective for patients undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from AIDS"

Ans E

1. According to the passage, people who suffer from glaucoma are most likely to seek prescriptions for marijuana for which of the following reasons?
Refer to the line "Marijuana is also known to reduce intraocular pressure, a condition that causes pain and even blindness in glaucoma sufferers"

A. Marijuana has been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting.
B. A controversial 2000 study suggested that THC, the active chemical in marijuana, can slow or stop the growth of certain types of tumors
C. Late-stage AIDS patients have reported that marijuana is one of the few treatments that can slow or reverse the wasting that often accompanies the disease.
D. Use of marijuana has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure.
E. Use of marijuana can induce a sense of euphoria that helps glaucoma patients feel less anxious about their condition.

2. The passage is primarily concerned with which of the following?
P 1: Federal Court order is passed for prosecuting those using Marijuana (even for medical Purposes) This will supersede the earlier order of the State Legislature.

P2: Proponents of this order presents the rationale behind this order., 1 :Marijuana has no medical use 2. It is a gateway to other high addictive drugs.

P3: Opponents argue that the federal order is exaggerated. They cite evidence of other countries where usage is legalized. Some medical benefits of Marijuana are also given. Those usage can only be medically verified if the marijuana is legalized for medical purposes.

A. The medical benefits of marijuana. ~ Benefits are mentioned only in the last paragraph.

B. The debate over the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes.

C. The debate over whether or not federal narcotics law overrides contradictory state laws. ~ The debate is not federal narcotics overriding state laws. It is about the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes.

D. The question of whether or not the legalization of marijuana increases rates of drug addiction and drug-related crimes. ~ This is only 1 argument of the debate.

E. A conflict over what types of medical conditions warrant the use of medical marijuana. ~ The medical conditions are not mentioned. The proponents of legalization want marijuana for medical purposes so future research can be made.

3. It can be inferred from the information given in the passage that opponents of marijuana legalization would be likely to agree with which of the following statements?
A. Even a strict system of regulation over production and distribution of medical marijuana cannot reliably prevent the misuse of the drug. ~ This is in line with the reasoning of opponents of marijuana legalization that is why they wants to ban the marijuana for all purposes. Alternatively if it is true than there is no need to oppose marijuana for medical purposes.

B. The decision of which medicine to use for a given medical condition is a matter best left between a patient and his or her doctor. ~ If this is true than the doctor may recommend marijuana drug to the patient.
C. Matters of narcotics regulation and enforcement are best addressed at the state level. ~ If the matter is addressed at State level than marijuana will be legalized for the medical purpose. As the same has earlier been legalized by State laws.

D. The use of marijuana provides no actual medical benefits for patients. ~ It cannot be inferred, as it is directly mentioned in the passage that "The position of federal law enforcement agencies is that marijuana has no legitimate medical use that cannot be better served by existing legal medications. "

E. It is acceptable to legalize the possession of marijuana as long as the production and sale of the drug are still illegal. ~ The opponents want complete ban on marijuana, even if the production and sale is illegal. Possession and Consumption of Marijuana will lead to drug- addiction and drug related crime.

4. Which of the following research results, if produced by a study conducted in a properly scientific manner, would offer the most support for proponents of the legalization of medical marijuana?

A. In a study of 150 occasional marijuana users, 65 percent reported a significant increase in appetite while under the influence of the drug. ~ Increase in appetite may not be directly related to any medical benefits.

B. Scientists have concluded that the long-term use of marijuana may significantly increase the levels of estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, in male users. ~ We cannot determine how increase in the level of estrogen affects the male users. In general they don't want it to increase and this may not support the proponents.

C. In a study of 1,000 felons convicted of drug-related offenses, 42 percent reported that marijuana was the first illegal drug they had used. ~ This will weaken the proponents argument as Marijuana leading to drug related offenses.

D. Historians have concluded that plants containing cannabinoid compounds, the active ingredients in marijuana, have been used as a part of traditional medicine in China for over 2,000 years. ~ From this we cannot determine 1) the efficiency of these medicines
2) Is there any alternative of traditional medicine in the existing legal medications which is better and more efficient.

E. In a study of 114 cancer patients who had experienced little or no relief with at least three prescription anti-nausea drugs, 56 reported significant relief of their symptoms after using marijuana. ~ If this is true than the marijuana clearly have significant benefits over the 3 prescribed anti - nausea drugs which may support the proponents argument for legalizing Marijuana for Medical Purposes.

1. According to the passage, people who suffer from glaucoma are most likely to seek prescriptions for marijuana for which of the following reasons?

A. Marijuana has been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting.
not related to glaucoma patients
B. A controversial 2000 study suggested that THC, the active chemical in marijuana, can slow or stop the growth of certain types of tumors.
Irrelevant, since it doesn't relate to eye disease
C. Late-stage AIDS patients have reported that marijuana is one of the few treatments that can slow or reverse the wasting that often accompanies the disease.
related to AIDS, not eye disease (glaucoma)
D. Use of marijuana has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure.
correct reason..as described in paragraph three
E. Use of marijuana can induce a sense of euphoria that helps glaucoma patients feel less anxious about their condition.
Not mentioned in the passage

2. The passage is primarily concerned with which of the following?

A. The medical benefits of marijuana.
too limited in scope
B. The debate over the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes.
correct answer, since all three paragraphs primarily focus over aspects related to legalization of marijuana
C. The debate over whether or not federal narcotics law overrides contradictory state laws.
Irrelevant prompt; No mention of contradictory nature of laws in the passage
D. The question of whether or not the legalization of marijuana increases rates of drug addiction and drug-related crimes.
Again, only a part of the passage deals with this aspect
E. A conflict over what types of medical conditions warrant the use of medical marijuana.
specific medical conditions not outlined

3. It can be inferred from the information given in the passage that opponents of marijuana legalization would be likely to agree with which of the following statements?

A. Even a strict system of regulation over production and distribution of medical marijuana cannot reliably prevent the misuse of the drug.
as mentioned in the 2nd paragraph -- "..argue that any law that legalizes the use of marijuana, even in a limited way, will lead to increased rates of drug addiction and drug-related crime..."
B. The decision of which medicine to use for a given medical condition is a matter best left between a patient and his or her doctor.
Irrelevant prompt..no such mention in the passage
C. Matters of narcotics regulation and enforcement are best addressed at the state level.
can't be inferred using the passage contents
D. The use of marijuana provides no actual medical benefits for patients.
medical benefits are accepted; however, there is the fear of misuse of marijuana
E. It is acceptable to legalize the possession of marijuana as long as the production and sale of the drug are still illegal.
No such qualification regarding the legalization of marijuana-- evident in the passage

4. Which of the following research results, if produced by a study conducted in a properly scientific manner, would offer the most support for proponents of the legalization of medical marijuana?

A. In a study of 150 occasional marijuana users, 65 percent reported a significant increase in appetite while under the influence of the drug.
increase in appetite-- not too strong a claim in favor of the legalization of medical marijuana
B. Scientists have concluded that the long-term use of marijuana may significantly increase the levels of estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, in male users.
will not justify the legalization of medical marijuana
C. In a study of 1,000 felons convicted of drug-related offenses, 42 percent reported that marijuana was the first illegal drug they had used.
Out of scope, no inference regarding legalization of medical marijuana
D. Historians have concluded that plants containing cannabinoid compounds, the active ingredients in marijuana, have been used as a part of traditional medicine in China for over 2,000 years.
usage of marijuana for traditional medicine for over 200 years -- effectively supports the legalization of medical marijuana
E. In a study of 114 cancer patients who had experienced little or no relief with at least three prescription anti-nausea drugs, 56 reported significant relief of their symptoms after using marijuana.
only approximately 50% of the sample patients benefited; weaker option vis-a-vis option (D)

2. The passage is primarily concerned with which of the following?

Official Explanation

3. It can be inferred from the information given in the passage that opponents of marijuana legalization would be likely to agree with which of the following statements?

Explanation

The passage states, regarding law enforcement agencies that oppose legalization, “They further argue that any law that legalizes the use of marijuana, even in a limited way, will lead to increased rates of drug addiction and drug-related crime.” The regulations mentioned in choice A are a form of “the limited way” described in the passage; if a person believes that any legalization will lead to increased rates of drug addiction, then that person would have to also believe the statement in choice A.

In the context of the passage it can only be assumed that an opponent of legalization would disagree with choices B, C, and E.

Choice D is worded too strongly; the passage represents legalization opponents as believing that “marijuana has no legitimate medical use that cannot be better served by existing legal medications”; therefore, the position is not that marijuana has no actual benefits, but that other drugs can produce these benefits with equivalent or greater efficacy

Official Explanation

4. Which of the following research results, if produced by a study conducted in a properly scientific manner, would offer the most support for proponents of the legalization of medical marijuana?

Explanation

The study described in E suggests that the claim of law enforcement officials that “marijuana has no legitimate medical use that cannot be better served by existing legal medications” may not be true for at least some medical conditions. The key to this study is the comparison of the efficacy of marijuana to other prescription medicines. Study A could be relevant if the study subjects were suffering from a dangerous loss of appetite, but the statement does not specify this.

D offers indirect support that cannabinoids may be effective as a medical treatment, but it is also possible that a traditional medical system could use materials that have no proven medical properties, or less effective properties than those found in modern medicines. D is a weaker answer than E.

I ran out of time. :( I barely had like 5 minutes to answer this passage before time ran out. :( Made my post at 7:59AM PST, just 1 minute before the time ran out. I can add the explanations now if needed.
I answered this passage in under 4 minutes. :P Thought I had answered all the questions incorrectly but it turns out that all my answers were right. :P

Frankly Speaking, I disagree with the main idea B

Now, it is true that the entire passage revolves around the debate of who is in favor and who is against the usage of pot.

However, everything is implanted when the Supreme Court decided that the FG could put under custody those who use pot even in those states where is legal. Eventually, overriding the same state legislature.

The debate about the pot is useful or less for medical purposes comes after because IF

1) We do have the first scenario in which the FG cannot arrest someone in a state where is legal to use the pot then Proponents of the legalization have the right

2) Conversely, law enforcement has the right to arrest someone regardless IF in a specific state, the pot is legal

My opinion

I would go for C instead of B

I know that the OA says C is too specific. ok ....so fa so good. Then what ? where is it specific ?

Notice also in B is true we have a debate over the health benefits of weed but because of the Suprem Court decision.
