Hello! Appeared in GMAT yesterday and scored a very satisfying 730 (Q-49, V-41).
My GMAT journey has been quite long and I started contemplating about GMAT around two years ago. Started off with enthusiasm and actually made good progress in first couple of months, but soon realized that the preparation wasn't going anywhere, since there was no consistencey.
Then work took over and somehow GMAT just took a back seat for more than a year. Thereafter, I thought of starting preparation again; this time, I decided to join coaching, primarily because I wanted to get over with the lethargy and the inertia, after having left preparation a year back.
In hind sight, this was a great decision, because coaching gave me an an extremely focused prepraration blueprint. I just adhered to the preparation and the assignments in coaching (though there were quite a handful of them, but again that proved to be good).
Another good decision was to participate on this forum, first as a "spectactor" and later as an active participant. I would suggest fellow aspirants also to actively participate. The reason I say this is because as long as one is just a spectactor, the participation remains passive and so, it becomes difficult to keep ourselves "disciplined"; but when you are actually posting actively, then you obviously look out for responses and counter responses to your posts. So, this really helps in preparation.
I was scoring in a similar range in the mocks provided by the coaching center as well as on GMATPreps (scored 710 and 740 on the two GMATPreps). However, on almost all mocks, I was consistently scoring 50/51 in Quant. So, 49 in Quant on the actual exam was slightly below what I was expecting. But overall, the score remained stable.
So, to summarize what worked for me:
i) Joining coaching - Since it provided extremely focused direction to my preparation and also, helped me overcome inertia, it proved great. However, I do think that there is sufficient good material available to do self prep. In fact, when I started couple of years back, I too wanted to do self prep.
ii) Don't neglect your strong areas - I was quite good in quant and so, didn't prepare much. Getting good scores in Quant on mocks further made me slightly neglect my quant preparation. With some more focused preparation in quant, I could have perhaps scored 51 in quant, and this would have significantly boosted my overall score.
iii) Active participation on GC - As I mentioned above, continuously posting on GMATClub, looking out for what others have to comment on your post...all this helps keeping "glued".
iv) Patience: As I have mentioned above, I started a couple of years back, had to drop my preparation, and then restarted around a year back. I feel that this is a scenario that is not unique to me, since most of the people preparing for GMAT are working professionals. Thankfully, there is no "end date" or "expiry date" for GMAT and so, it gives you time to regroup and re-prepare.
Will now look at preparing my apps for schools that I have in mind, though I have time for that. I know that's going to be equally challenging, if not more.
