After 6 years in financial audit at EY Kazakhstan, decided to transfer into company which aims to build positive environmental impact project. In this project I took leadership position (C-level) and led cross-functional team successfully developing and implementing strategies in order to realize the project in the most effective and financially viable way.

After spending more than 3 years on this project and successfully commissioning the operation, I decided to pursue MBA in order to pivot into management consulting to further drive positive changes in the larger scale.

Beside my career, I always was able to contribute to the firms and the community by organizing social clubs by interest, which I extensively mention in my essays.
I also naturally want to help people with their challenges, which is why I started mentoring and leading lectures and trainings as well. I found a passion in it, so after 10-12 years I want continue educating and mentoring young professionals along with building my own PE/VC firm.

Everything looks good. you seem to have many passions which I assume you would have captured quite well in the essays (the small writeup over here proves this). I am mainly concerned about your long term goal - exiting consulting to join a PE firm is challenging, but starting a PE fund would be very difficult. Moreover, what is your rationale for this career path?

Thank you for your comment. I was wondering whether PE firms in US and in other regions apply the same principles. In fact, I am not really targeting US PE/VC firms.

Hi! I have two comments here
1) Top B schools will not look at audit profiles very favorably, there is just an unspoken bias there. If you have not already, make every effort to tie your financial audit experience to work at IB/PE firms(maybe these were your clients) where you have gained deep insights into their operations and challenges, which is a key differentiator. Help adcoms understand that your audit experience goes beyond repetitive compliance reviews and positions you very well for your long-term goals.

2) You left EY and worked on a sustainability project for 3 years. This experience must really bring out all the qualities that you may not have shown so much during the audit phase. Since the time you spent in both jobs is significant, you should really be very strategic about showing that you are progressively learning through different experiences in both jobs, all relevant to your goals.

If you want to build your own VC fund, you need to show that you have got something up your sleeve and that you have already started putting pieces together, even if it's just in the form of strategic relationships with the right people. Consulting work obviously gives you that universal credibility, but you also need to show why consulting firms are interested in you (this relates to my comments above)

Best wishes

Thank you for your comment. Really helpful.

I've already started putting pieces together, as you said, it is really important to build strategic relationships, and throughout my career I was able to form right connections, however, with limited geography. I would be really grateful if you have other tips for me in term of breaking into consulting, school selection. Let's connect. I will send an email to you

Hi Migaon
Priyanka here from ARINGO. It's sad to hear about the dings at your target schools. Your GMAT score and GPA are a bit below average for the schools you are targeting, however, it's your leadership in that C-level role and the shift to a purpose-driven company that really shines.

Your ACCA and community contributions are strong differentiators. To really pinpoint where you can boost your applications, I would like to know how did you frame your environmental project's impact in your essays?

Congrats on the Tuck and Kellogg interviews! Fingers crossed for more!
Seems like a great profile with high in demand demographics.
P.S. The school rank is not a huge deal for consulting so potentially considering places such as Fuqua, Yale, and Ross or even Darden and Tepper could bring some options for $$ 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the input! Would you advise considering Fuqua, Yale, and Ross in R3 as backup? I did well in the Tuck interview, but I guess we’ll know only in March.

Unfortunately around three is never recommended but if you are determined to go to school this year, you can throw your hat in. It’s just not a very productive round because a lot of the spots are gone and a lot of the financial aid is gone but there are exceptions, sometimes people even get admitted from waitlist with a scholarship so everything happens as long as you keep trying. I would probably see how your invitations go out For other programs. You won’t know in time so you can make this decision sometime in February. I would also say that your interview is more of a validation of a couple points and absolutely a very valuable component of your application but that’s not what we decide you getting in or not getting in. Sometimes you may have a bad interview and it may dinger application but even an awesome interview will not get you in if your application is lacking compared to other folks....

Applying in around three is also tough logistically because you have to pay deposit after around two decisions and then you’re not committing until you’ll get a decision in May or June and that’s really far down the road but at the same time people do it and survive. It’s just not optimal.

Hi BB! I'm on a tough spot right now. I'm only alive on Tuck and Kellogg, awaiting decisions (Tuck was secured interview). Duke is Feb20 deadline and awaiting interview invite. Darden is R3 so tough... I'm considering applying to Cornell, Mccombs, Yale for R3. I do want to go this year, as I'm already 32yo.
What do you think?
As a side note, I'm pretty sure mi low GPA has a lot do to with the 4 denies. It's 2.5ish.
Greatly appreciate your input.

Hi. You can see my reply above about round three.... I assume you are sending an optional essay explaining why your low GPA was an unusual circumstance?

If you are going to apply in round three, I would probably argue or say that perhaps more than your GPA is the hangup and I’m wondering if you should change your post NBA career goal to something less of a change and more aligned with your experience. That way in the eyes of the admissions, you will be leveraging your long experience rather than putting it aside and trying to break into a new industry. So think about what your safety option is and make that your primary goal and that may just help them see you as a stronger candidate ...

Thank you! Indeed, I sent an optional essay and has recently finished the MBA Math course, which I have sent to the ones I'm still alive.

That's a really good point... I really want consulting but maybe I should focus on technology or consumer electronics?
Of course, if Tuck or Kellogg accept me, I'll go to either one, but I'm really scared and want to have more backups.

Worst case scenario I would apply again next year, but worried about my age (just turn 32 a couple of days ago).
User avatar

07 Mar 2025, 19:26
I did not say you should not go into consulting but what you do and what you put on the essays may not be the same thing.

What admissions committee does is they evaluate your likelihood of employment and if they see that it’s not high or they have concerns, they consider a candidate weaker as the result

I have 7 years of work experience from a variety of industries - pharmaceuticals, banking, tech (amazon), and luxury retail. I have had multiple roles throughout my career giving me strong insight into the different challenges/opportunities available in each. Post-MBA, I hope to either go into consulting or entrepreneurship.

Hi. Not sure if you requested an evaluation so I’m going to comment briefly just in case you did not 😇

From what I have seen, the competitive pool of applicants for China and India seems to be very highly motivated with high test scores. I’m hoping your test score doesn’t keep you out but if you haven’t been getting interview invites, that could be one reason.

We have had a very capable applicant from China with very good speaking and presentation skills and great brands on the resume and 760 class gym at score not get a single M7 admit last year but be quite successful in Europe so that could be another option potentially.

But I’m hoping they look past the score and see the strength of your profile as well.

Hi KKKGGG12
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, 8 years in the industry looks good. That should be the main highlight of your application. A 655 FE would be of slight concern to me considering the schools you are targeting, any chance of a retake? I would like you to share a detailed profile for better understanding of your chances at your target programs.

The school shortlist would be contingent on your test score, but from a prelim analysis you can add McCombs to your list since it does a pretty good job in roles relating to the O&G, Power and Energy industries. Even Kelley maybe a good bet given their strengths in Supply Chain and Ops, so quite a few roles in those functions in the MBA program. Honestly, general industry roles withing manufacturing tend to be scarce for international students given the challenges around immigration and visa sponsorships so companies tend to prefer domestic students for a lot of these roles. Since O&G, Power are national assests these companies are not open to international students, your best bet from a career standpoint would be to probably think about consulting and after spending a couple of years and getting past the H1B hurdle to think about a corporate role within the desired industry.
EU can be a good option for Energy work ex since there is a big pivot towards Clean Energy / Sustainability and hence multiple opportunities are opening up within the ecosystem. Traditional large players like Shell, BP, RWE, Total etc are heavily focusing on their clean energy shift and hence there are opportunities for MBA graduates to explore careers within these domains.

Hope that helps? Feel free to reach out at [email protected] | +918368000961 for any other queries and focus your efforts on getting a solid GMAT score.

All the best!

Hi and welcome to GMAT Club.

For Ross and Fuqua you are probably looking at 740+ or higher for your demo. Just FYI.

It is possible to take the GRE by the way but so far I am seeing a lot more $$ going towards GMAT scholarships. This may be just me 🤷‍♂️

Otherwise, good start for schools. I think maybe add Tepper or maybe Kelley on the lower safety end and depending on the score and profile, Kellogg is always a strong choice.

SCM is not a glorious area ao you don’t have to have a strong brand to get a job usually (though does not hurt). I would consider lower-ranked programs with scholarships. But you need a 700+ for that and the higher the better - you can save a lot of money by working really hard on your gmat 👍

Hello @MBAEdge and @bb,

Thank you for your reply. It took me some time to get here but I am finally done with GMAT and got 705.

Can you please suggest me recommendations based on updated profile? I don't want to go for lower-ranked program even with a scholarship, I want to get into a top reputed university M7 or T15, please let me know what are my chances?
