Targeting a career pivot from hands-on engineering roles into a business/technology hybrid role such as product management or product strategy, leveraging technical background as well as my communication skills and interest in broader strategic impact.

Hello Ayush,

Thanks for sharing your profile. With 6 years of experience in the U.S. software industry and a 3.5 GPA, you bring a solid foundation for a Northeast MBA. However, the 655 GMAT Focus score presents a challenge, it's below the median for all your listed schools, especially the M7 and top-tier programs like Wharton, Sloan, and Columbia.

Your pivot to a business/tech hybrid role is a natural evolution, and your communication skills can certainly support that transition. That said, admissions committees will want to see clear evidence of leadership, strategic impact, or cross-functional collaboration, these can strongly support your case given the current test score.

NYU Stern and Cornell Johnson seem like better fits at this stage, especially with your NYC preference, and Tepper remains a viable option with strong execution. Still, if you're aiming for schools like Wharton or Sloan, a GMAT retake would significantly strengthen your competitiveness and open up more scholarship opportunities.

Hi @Ayush Mittal
Thanks for sharing your profile!

With 6 years of work experience in computer software and a 3.5 GPA, you have a admirable repertoire. However, the primary concern at the moment is your 655 GMAT score which may prove to be a hurdle for schools like Wharton, Columbia, Sloan, and Stern, all of whom need a 690+ to make the cut. You should consider retaking the GMAT if these schools are your ultimate targets or you can consider attempting the GRE and try for a 325+ score.

Looking at your professional pursuits, working in hands-on engineering roles will be well-appreciated by the AdComs. However, you haven’t specified much about your work because of which it’s difficult to estimate how well your application is placed at this moment. Provide some insights into your company’s pedigree, your roles and responsibilities, promotion history (if any), the impact or outcomes you’ve delivered in both quantitative and qualitative terms, any leadership exposure, etc. Since you’ve mentioned that you want to pivot from hands-on engineering roles into a business/technology hybrid role, try to show some transferable skills (cross-functional work, project management, etc.) you have acquired from your work. Also, explain your pivot well instead of simply saying ‘leveraging communication skills and broader strategic impact.’ Talk about what inspired you to make the pivot. Maybe you were influenced by the business outcomes you were able to achieve via your contributions, or you were involved in strategic decision-making or were part of one or you had been involved in some inter-departmental work with sales/product/strategy teams. Whatever it may be, ensure that you provide a well-curated reasoning.

For your stated post-MBA goals, while they are attainable, they currently lack specificity as well. Ask yourself: ‘What kind of roles am I targeting? (Product Manager, Tech Strategy Consultant or Business Operations Lead?’ ‘What type of industries captivates my interests? (FinTech, SaaS, tec.)’ ‘What are my long-term plans? (overseeing scalable tech transformation, etc.)’ Answering these questions will give you clarity on your goals. Just remember to relate your ambitions with your existing skillset.

Moving on to assessing your school options:
- Columbia and Stern align well with your regional preference and career goals. But both are competitive, and your score is notably below their average GMAT Focus ranges (~690–710). A GMAT retake will be quite helpful here.
- Johnson (Cornell) and Tepper may be open to your current score, especially if your essays are strong. Both offer good tech pipelines, and Johnson's immersion program and close ties to NYC are strategic advantages.
- You mostly will not be a competitive fit for MIT Sloan and Wharton in their Round 1 cycle. Consider applying here in Round 2 after retaking the GMAT.
Would you be open to adding schools like Darden, Ross, or Fuqua to your list. These schools are more suited to your present score and also have a strong tech-business presence.

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Hi @Ayush Mittal,

You have a solid foundation for an MBA application with 6 years of experience in the software industry and a clear goal to transition into a more strategic, business-facing role within tech. Your GPA of 3.5 is within range for most programs, but your GMAT Focus score of 655 is slightly on the lower side for top programs. If possible, I’d encourage you to retake the GMAT and aim to improve your score by 20–30 points to strengthen your application and stay competitive. Focus on articulating your goals and career transition plan clearly - make sure your goals are specific and well-defined & connect your past experiences to your future goals.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools. Feel free to book a free call with our MBA consultants for a more detailed discussion. Here’s a brief background about me:

i. I’m a qualified Chartered Accountant (CA), Cost Accountant (CMA), and CFA—based on my research, fewer than 300 professionals (rough estimation) hold this combination globally.

ii. Currently working as an AVP at an investment banking firm—also I was made the youngest AVP in my firm ever, having been promoted twice in the last three years.

iii. Over the last three years, I’ve closed M&A transactions totaling over USD 100 million.

iv. Recently led the team that closed McKinsey’s first M&A transaction in India.

v. Represented our firm at GITEX (the largest annual tech exhibition) as team lead—another first for us.

vi. Previously spent four years at EY in their Assurance team.

Hello Vinashak,

Your background in investment banking is well aligned with Booth’s strengths, particularly given the volume of M&A deals and leadership roles you’ve held. The CA, CMA, and CFA combination speaks to technical depth, but the GMAT Focus score 695 is below Booth’s median. It may impact competitiveness, especially given the overrepresentation of Indian male finance candidates.

You’ll need to ensure the rest of your application (essays, LORs, resume) clearly demonstrates differentiation and clarity of purpose. Are you looking to remain in the front-end IB post-MBA, or do you see Booth as a step toward a longer-term pivot into roles like PE or strategy?

With all those awesome qualifications, you will need convincing and compelling answers to why you need an MBA education, especially since you want to go where you are coming from. Where exactly do you want to go, if not just an elevation in your level/grade/title? Your being in those <300 counts may not hold much sway.
Your total tenure of experience is not stated. I assume it is 7+ (not sure how much + though). As already stated, your Indian male profile sets a strong expectation to have a GMAT score that's higher than the average of the school by at least 20-30 points. You can do the math as to what improvement you would need in your score. And though not stated, your GPA may also be important.

Hi @Vinashak
Thanks for sharing your profile!
You’ve not mentioned your undergrad GPA which is crucial to ascertain your profile strength. A 695 on the GMAT focus is on the lower side for Booth which usually has an average of 720+. But you have a very competitive profile so this could offset your GMAT score.
As you are a CA+CMA+CFA holder, you will have a huge advantage in the applicant pool. What gives you a further edge is your work experience as you have worked with a Big4 firm and in the IB sector. You have earned 2 promotions in 3 years which will exemplify your professional growth and leadership strengths. Moreover, the quality of your work is exemplary and if explained properly in your essays will make your applications compelling.
Your post-MBA goal is to stay in the IB sector which will work very well for you given your current profile and the MBA pedigree. Only ensure that in your essays, you outline your short-term and long-terms plans in the IB industry.
Chicago Booth has very good alumni ties with bulge brackets and elite boutiques so you can expect a good entry in the US IB market. You will also have the opportunity to join the Booth Investment Management Group (BIG) which will give you access to major buy-side events.
So Booth is definitely a strong fit for you.
We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Thanks for sharing your profile @Vinashak , your profile tells a powerful story of drive, grit, and exceptional achievement. With a rare trifecta of qualifications, CA, CMA, and CFA, you’ve already set yourself apart as someone who thrives in academically rigorous environments, which aligns perfectly with Booth’s analytical and data-driven approach. What’s even more impressive is your rapid career growth, becoming the youngest AVP at your firm, leading M&A deals worth over $100 million, and breaking new ground by steering McKinsey’s first M&A transaction in India. These aren’t just milestones, they reflect the kind of impact Booth looks for in future leaders.

Beyond the numbers, your leadership at GITEX and your foundational years at EY show a well-rounded finance professional who’s not only technical but also strategic. While your GMAT Focus score of 695 is good. If you’re able to bring your journey to life in your essays, highlighting not just what you’ve done, but why it matters to you and where you want to go, you’ll be putting forward a very compelling application. If you do have the bandwidth to retake the GMAT and push it up even slightly, that could further strengthen your profile, but even without that, you’re can be in the running. Keep that clarity and momentum going. We’d be happy to take a closer look at your profile, learn more about your journey, and provide a thoughtful assessment.Let’s chat. Feel free to Book a Session.

Hey Vinashak
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, a 695 is a strong score. But the combination of CA, CMA and CFA is the major highlight of your profile. This combination will help you stand out amidst the pool of applicants. These qualifications also demonstrate your commitment to financial expertise and rigorous academic achievements.

Your rapid career progression at your IB firm and becoming the youngest AVP ever with two promotions in three years are very impressive. Furthermore, having closed over USD 100 million in M&A transactions in just three years showcases tangible deal experience and your ability to execute complex financial projects.

Booth's FT-MBA program is highly quantitative and analytically rigorous, which aligns well with your financial background and professional achievements. Adcoms at Booth value candidates who can contribute to their collaborative learning environment. It will be very crucial for you to articulate your motivations for pursuing an MBA at this stage and establish how Booth will help you achieve your goals.

Can you talk more about the challenges you faced while closing these M&A transactions, and also highlight the leadership lessons have you learned from that?

Hi @Vinashak,

You have a strong profile that would be competitive for top MBA programs like Booth. Your academic credentials - a qualified CA, CMA, and CFA reflect technical depth and academic rigor, which align well with Booth. Professionally, your rapid rise to AVP and distinction as the youngest in your firm's history demonstrate clear leadership potential and high performance. Your M&A deal experience, including over USD 100 million in transactions and leading McKinsey’s first M&A deal in India, further reinforces the strength of your professional background.

Your post-MBA goal of continuing in investment banking is both focused and credible, which admissions committees value. While your GMAT Focus score of 695 is competitive, it’s slightly on the lower side for overrepresented candidates from Indian finance backgrounds. It’s not a dealbreaker, but if feasible, a retake to push your score higher could strengthen your application further.

@Vinashak - some thoughts/ clarifications:

1. You haven't mentioned your undergrad college/ grades? The GMAT is a bit on the lower side for Booth given the competitive Indian pool. Was it your first attempt, and do you foresee improvement if you were to retake?

2. Your professional experience is strong, given the finance/ IB exposure, impact of your work, and promotions. Is your firm F-100/ mid/ small sized? And what are your career goals post MBA?

3. Have you been involved in any extracurricular activities since undergrad?

At this point, it'd be ideal to improve your score to increase your chances. Either way, a strong application covering your professional/ personal angles, career goals, and motivation for an MBA would be important.

FYI, here's the list of top B-schools for finance careers along with their published hiring stats: https://admitstreet.com/blog/best-busin ... e-careers/

I have completed my Bachelors in Engineering with CGPA 8.54/10.

After graduation, I worked in a coaching institute and prepared for civil services exam for 2 years.

Then I took up the job in Public Sector Bank.
I have 7.5 years of experience in Public Sector Bank in Foreign Exchange and Trade Finance.

So my total work experience will be 9.5 years.

My GMAT FE Score is apparently less, I have already attempted twice and it is 595.

I am planning to apply for one year MBA programs in Europe and Singapore for 2025 Intake.
I would require suggestions on profile shift after MBA and probable schools I can try for.

And I would also want to know, if my age will be an impediment, presently I am 30 years old.

It is a bit of a tricky GMAT score but looking at your work experience, it may be OK/good enough.
For Europe age is a good thing, so 30 years (even in the US) is not really an issue or a problem. 32 or 33 would be getting up there. Your biggest considerations will be your GMAT score but I think it is OK. These programs are not super concerned about the scores as they don't release averages to anyone.

P.S. It would improve your chances if you make your post-MBA goal very achievable and easy to transition to. You have to think about how you will find a job and what will be the source of that job offer. You should not count on the school delivering it to you (they prefer that you don't as that puts expectations on them to deliver and perform in the future, something they can't predict) so you want to emphasize as much as possible that you have identified where you want to work, already networking with people, and almost have that job in your pocket, just need this small formality of an MBA. Hope that makes sense.

I have received offer from EDHEC Global MBA and awaiting decision from Mannheim , SDA Bocconi and RSM as well. I am looking to transition into Consulting or Finance. Can you help with your insights, which is a better school for finance / consulting. Because the EDHEC scholarship deadline is nearer and I have requested to the school, to extend the scholarship deadline because others said I would receive the outcome by Mid - May.

Hi @vaishmahe , I hope you are doing well! With 9.5 years of professional experience, including 7.5 years in retail banking with expertise in foreign exchange and trade finance, and a strong academic background (GPA 8.5/10 in engineering), you bring significant depth to an MBA application. Your diverse journey, including a stint preparing for civil services and transitioning into banking, adds a unique dimension to your profile. However, your GMAT score of 595 may pose a challenge for competitive one-year MBA programs in Europe and Singapore. To strengthen your candidacy, focus on clearly articulating your leadership experiences, professional achievements, and post-MBA goals in finance. If feasible, consider retaking the GMAT aiming for a higher score or exploring schools that take a holistic view of applications. Highlighting your maturity, adaptability, and readiness for senior roles will be critical to overcoming perceived challenges like age or test scores. You can take a look at this Blog.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to discuss your profile in detail. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

I am a first generation graduate,, and a qualified chartered accountant the equivalent of a USCPA and I work in audit for a big 4 firm in Zimbabwe( which is very difficult to get in), my low gpa was a result of having to balance work and study in the final years of my undergrad as a result of my mother being diagnosed of cancer forcing me to start working so that I could take care of the medical bills.

I intend to pivot from audit to consulting post mba since I feel like I have learnt all I need to learn in audit and want to use my audit experience in financial analysis to consulting. In addition audit is centered more on problem finding and I am more interested in solution finding hence why I want to join consulting.

In addition I volunteer to teach entrepreneurs in rural Zimbabwe on management of business and financial management and was able to turn around 3 businesses for the people I teach/ consult to a profit making position( reason why I think I can excel in consulting)

I am also the soccer captain for the company I work for and have managed to win tittles for the company

Age is 28

Hi Big Jeff
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Your profile looks inspiring. With 5 years of experience at a Big 4 firm in Zimbabwe, you've already beaten steep odds. Balancing work and studies while caring for a sick parent is no small feat, and it speaks volumes about your resilience. Being a first-generation graduate and a qualified CA further adds value to your application.

Your plan to pivot from audit to consulting makes a lot of sense. You’ve developed a sharp eye for financial analysis through audit, and that strength will serve you well in consulting. Your work of volunteering to help rural entrepreneurs manage their businesses and actually turning them into profitable ventures is truly inspiring and will help you stand out amidst the pool of applicants.

Now that you’ve made it to the interview stage at Marshall and Ross and are waitlisted at Tepper, this is a great moment to reflect on what’s working and where there is still room for improvement. You will have to tailor your narrative more clearly for each school’s unique strengths.

After 3.5 years working in a Brazilian fintech company, I am eager to pursue my MBA and move with my wife to the US or Europe.

Short-term goal: Product Manager at Amazon or Google.
Long-term goal: Entrepreneurship or become a product leader at fintech companies such as Nubank or in the Big Techs.

I am primarily considering IESE and LBS because I prefer to work in Europe initially, but I am also open to exploring US universities.

I am quite upbeat about your chances so long as you compile strong applications for these b-schools. Just one thing- it will be odd to talk about fintech as a long term goal if it's not part of your short term plan.

Hi Gabriel,
Priyanka this side from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, I see a compelling narrative with a solid foundation. Your four years of experience in a fintech company, coupled with a 675 score looks decent. While your GPA is slightly low for the schools you are targeting, are you looking for a GMAT retake?

Your goal to transition into PM roles at giants like Amazon or Google in the short run and then your aspirations of entrepreneurship/leadership within the dynamic fintech landscape demonstrates impressive drive and strategic thinking.

IESE and LBS aligns well with your global aspirations plus these schools have a strong international reputation and connections within the European tech scene. Speaking for LBS, it has a diverse student body and a prime location. Apart from that its robust career service will open doors to exciting opportunities for students. If you are looking for US, MIT will also be offering you a lot of opportunities. To build a strong application it will be crucial for you to share more about the scale and impact of the projects you've been involved in.

Thank you for sharing your profile @Gabriel Santos ! With 4 years of work experience in a Brazilian fintech company, you're coming from a high-growth, globally relevant sector, technology and financial innovation, which b-schools are keen to highlight in their classes. Your background provides a good foundation for your post-MBA goal of transitioning into product management at a major tech company like Amazon or Google, especially given your market-relevant experience and the increasing interest in Latin American tech ecosystems from global recruiters.

Your GMAT Focus score of 675 places you in a competitive position, especially if the rest of your application (essays, recommendations) is compelling.

Your GPA of 7/10 may raise some questions, depending on your undergraduate institution and grading context. If your academic record shows upward trends or you have strong quantitative performance, you should highlight that. Consider proactively addressing any concerns in an optional essay and demonstrating your analytical skills through certifications (like, Google PM certs, Coursera data science/SQL/AI courses), or even the HBS Online CORe or MBA Math, especially if you're aiming for quant-heavy product roles post-MBA. You can take a look at this BLOG.

Geographically, you’re well-aligned with IESE and LBS, not only do they have strong placement records across Europe and international exposure baked into their programs, but they also offer excellent product and tech recruiting pipelines, especially into companies like Amazon, Google, and local fintechs (Revolut, Wise, Klarna, and more). IESE's structured case method and focus on global leadership can pair well with your fintech background and entrepreneurial aspirations. LBS, with its strong alumni network in London’s tech and finance space, gives you unmatched proximity to VC/fintech hubs. If you're targeting MIT Sloan, you’d need to position yourself as a tech innovator with entrepreneurial potential, tying your fintech journey to leadership, creativity, or impact stories that resonate with Sloan’s ethos.

A few key areas you shall focus on: Why now? Why MBA? Why product management specifically? Why in Europe vs. U.S.? Make this compelling. Do you have examples of team leadership, cross-functional collaboration, or product impact? These will be crucial in your essays and interviews. Each of your target schools has a distinct culture, IESE’s collaborative and globally aware cohort, LBS’s dynamic and flexible environment, and MIT’s data- and innovation-driven ethos. Show that you’ve done your homework and can thrive in that culture.

A few questions: Do you have international exposure (clients, markets, travel, remote teams)? Have you engaged in community work, mentoring, or side ventures that show leadership or commitment beyond your day job?

Overall, you’re on the right track. With some refinements, you shall be in a good position to apply. If you'd like, we'd be happy to learn more about your journey. Let’s chat. Feel free to Book a Session.

Hi Gabriel,

You’ve got solid fintech experience. IESE and LBS are great fits given your European focus, but your 675 GMAT Focus might hold you back at places like Sloan or even LBS. A retake could really shift your odds. If you’ve had strong impact at work, especially around product or user growth, make sure that shines through.

Happy to connect and help you tighten your school list and narrative.

Hey James, thanks for sharing your profile.

With 5 years in healthcare and plans to stay in the industry post-MBA, you’ve got a focused and practical career path. Schools appreciate candidates who know what they want and have a clear line of sight into their post-MBA goals.

Your 690 GMAT is right in line with what Carlson typically sees, especially for their part-time program. It won’t wow anyone, but it won’t hold you back either, assuming the rest of your application shows strong professional impact.

The part-time MBA at Carlson is very well connected to the local healthcare ecosystem. If you're already in the Minneapolis area and planning to stay, it’s a great fit. Companies like Medtronic, UnitedHealth, and Mayo all recruit locally, and Carlson has good brand equity in the region.

Just make sure you're able to clearly explain your career story. If your current role as a product and supplement reviewer sounds niche, try to connect it to broader business decisions. Talk about strategy, product development, market insights; anything that shows you're not just reviewing but driving impact.

Overall, you’re in a good position. Let me know if you want help prepping for the interview or refining your narrative a bit more.

Best,
Ameer Khatri

Currently working for family business (Energy & Construction) in a management role

Post-MBA - Long term looking to expand family business with a venture capital arm. Possibly look for startup and VC experience in the short term post-MBA.

I know chances are quite low for the rounds I applied but as I'm an older applicant, I think it will be too late to wait 1 more year. So I will apply to a few January intake programs as well. Any other programs I should consider applying?

Hi mbaseeker1241
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, a 750 looks strong on the classic version. With 10 years of experience, you fall on the upper end of the spectrum. The most important aspect for you will be to establish a strong reason for 'why MBA?'.

Now, with 10 years of experience, you should be in a comfortable position to demonstrate your leadership skills and quantify impact at workplace. Another crucial aspect will be to align the values of the schools with your long-term career goals.

Hi Kashta123
Your experience looks impressive. Your global exposure will also be beneficial for you particularly for INSEAD. One thing to keep in mind is that you are able to demonstrate impact clearly at workplace. Are there any more schools that you wish to add to your school list? Did you prepare a decision matrix while shortlisting schools?

@Kashta123 ! Your international experience in impact consulting and sustainable development gives you a strong, mission-driven edge, especially for schools like INSEAD and HEC Paris, which love globally minded candidates. But let’s talk about the real challenge, breaking into private equity from consulting. PE firms are notorious for favoring candidates with direct deal experience, financial modeling skills, and investment exposure, which means you’ll need to bridge that gap before applying. First and foremost, GMAT is important, a 720+ will make you competitive, especially at finance-heavy schools like Stern and INSEAD. Next, highlight any exposure to due diligence, financial analysis, or investment strategy in your essays, and consider taking CFA Level 1 or financial modeling courses to strengthen your finance credentials. Lastly, timing matters, Stern R4 is risky (late rounds are always tough), so make sure your GMAT and story are rock-solid.

We'd love to learn more about your profile in detail, let’s chat, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.
