Hi everyone,

Looking for some honest advice on my MBA profile. Just retook the GRE and got 324 (earlier attempts: 315 in April, 309 in July). Planning to apply to R1 for 1-year or accelerated MBA programs.

Background:

Work Experience: ~9 years total (10 by matriculation).

~5.5 years in Corporate Finance, Private Equity, & Investment Banking research support roles (Financial Modeling, Comps Analysis, M&A research etc.)

Last ~3.5 years in Training & Development, where I lead technical upskilling initiatives in Investment Banking and Private Equity domains (M&A, LBO modeling etc).

The switch was intentional, as I was always interested in L&D, and this seemed like a great fit of my domain and function.

Post-MBA Goals: Pivot into front-office/strategy roles within Investment Banking or Corporate Development.

Academics: Commerce undergrad from a Delhi University, ~73%.

Age: 30.

Other Details:

Founded a photography & travel club at undergrad level.

Volunteer experience with a microfinance NGO (helping train rural entrepreneurs on basic financial tools).

Currently based in India.

Preference for 1-year formats; keeping budget in check (ideally <$80k tuition).

Target Schools So Far:

ISB
HEC Paris
Imperial
INSEAD
LBS
Cambridge
Oxford
NUS
NTU
IIM Bangalore EPGP
IIMA Ahmedabad PGPX

Questions:
1. How do you see my competitiveness for these schools with a GRE 324 and my background?

2. Any strong alternatives in Europe/Canada/Australia under $80k that I should add to the list?

3. Would US one-year MBAs like Kellogg 1Y, Cornell Tech, Duke, Emory be viable given my age/experience?

4. Will 2-year MBA be suitable for me, considering my workex, age, ROI? If yes, a few suggestions here will be appreciated.

Thanks for your time and inputs.

Training others on IB topics shows that you have built up a solid conceptual understanding over the years. But if your goal is to move into a front-office position after the MBA, for eg. in M&A, capital markets or coverage, you will need to demonstrate not only your expertise, but also your experience in deal execution, client engagement, and financial modeling, likely from the past IB experience.

At the moment, your description suggests you have been in more of a middle-office or support role (but maybe I am wrong). That’s not a deal breaker, but you need to be strategic. Schools and recruiters will want to see why the move makes sense and how your previous experience will add value to a front office role. You might want to do that:
1. Start telling a story that connects your previous work to your deal making skills.
2. Highlight any modeling, valuation or pitchbook experience.
3. Showcase a vision in terms of industries or problems you want to impact.

Your GRE is too low. Target upwards of a 327 as you are focused on a finance heavy domain.

Wondering how your profile stacks up? Get a free profile evaluation and discuss a tailored MBA plan that aligns with your goals.
Best wishes

Hi @bellabournvita
Thanks for sharing your profile!

You’re at the senior-most end of the full-time MBA applicant pool with 9 years of work-ex, especially for programs like ISB, HEC Paris, and Imperial. That said, your depth of domain exposure within Investment Banking, both in front-end roles and more recently in Learning & Development, makes for a unique profile but also comes with certain risks in terms of perception and re-entry into front-office roles.

You hold 74% (~3.7 GPA) from your undergrad which is decent. But the GRE score of 315 is currently the weakest link in your profile. Given the high competition at ISB and global schools, and your aim to pivot back into front-office IB roles (which themselves are extremely selective post-MBA), your GRE needs to be at least 327+ to be considered competitive. It's good that you're planning to retake the GRE as this will be a make-or-break factor for schools like HEC and ISB.

Your 7 years of front-end IB work in multinational firms is a major strength, especially if you can showcase deal exposure, leadership in transaction execution, and progression across roles. The pivot to L&D is unusual and may raise questions, not because it lacks merit, but because it may suggest a drift away from the core finance track. That said, you can frame this well if you present it as a strategic pause where you deepened your domain expertise and developed training/leadership skills while staying within the IB vertical.

To strengthen your work narrative:
- Quantify your deal experience (volume, sectors, clients).
- Clarify why the switch to L&D happened and how it connects to your renewed drive to return to front-office roles.
- Speak of your mentorship and leadership in your L&D tenure.
- If available, talk about international exposure in your IB role

Your stated goals which is to return to Investment Banking in front-end or strategy roles are clear but need better nuance. Schools will want to know:
- What kind of IB work — M&A advisory, ECM, DCM, restructuring, sector-focused?
- How will an MBA fill gaps you currently face in getting back into IB?
- Are you open to corporate finance or strategy roles as a bridge?

IB hiring, especially in front-office, is still extremely competitive, even for traditional candidates. Your background will be respected, but re-entering IB after 2 years in a non-transactional role and with 9+ years of experience puts you in a trickier position unless you can clearly articulate your continued relevance and preparedness. You might want to hedge your post-MBA plan slightly by being open to roles in corporate development, financial strategy, boutique advisory, or even PE operations. These often welcome more seasoned professionals.

Speaking of your School Fit & Application Strategy:

- ISB: A good fit but remember that ISB is very GMAT/GRE sensitive. A 315 won’t cut it, but a 325+ might.
- HEC Paris: Strong for finance, especially in Europe. However, EU IB roles are tough to crack for non-EU citizens unless language or work rights are present. Again, GRE must improve.
- Imperial: This is a more realistic selection but also not a major IB feeder. Could work well if you're open to post-MBA UK roles in corporate finance or strategic finance.
- IIM EPGP: Good choice if living in India and fast-tracking to senior roles in this region is your objective.

For global mobility and IB aspirations, consider adding ESMT Berlin, ESADE, or Rotterdam as geographic hedges.

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Thank you for sharing your profile @bellabournvita. Based on your profile, there’s a lot of depth, leadership potential, and domain expertise that you bring to the table.

You’ve built a relevant foundation in investment banking across multinational firms, which positions you well for an MBA with a post-MBA goal in the same industry. The 7 years of hands-on experience in front-end IB roles are valued, particularly at schools that recruit heavily for finance. Transitioning to a domain-focused Learning & Development role in the same space can also be seen as a leadership-oriented pivot, as long as it is framed correctly in your application as a deliberate step that reinforced your expertise, communication skills, and mentorship capacity. You might want to take a look at this BLOG on How to Exhibit Different Forms of Leadership. Your academic credentials, including a 74% in a Commerce degree from Delhi University, which fall within an acceptable range for international MBA programs, especially if your transcripts include quant-heavy coursework.

The most immediate area for improvement is your GRE score. Great that you are already planning a retake. A 315 is below the average for your target schools, particularly ISB, HEC, and IIMA PGPX, where the average tends to fall in the 325-330+ range for competitive applicants. You may find this blog on Navigating Low GMAT/GPA Scores in MBA Applications particularly insightful. A 325+ GRE score will significantly improve your odds and help offset your age and slightly unconventional recent experience in L&D. Given your goal to return to front-office finance, the score will also serve as a signal of your analytical aptitude and preparedness for an MBA.

Another area to reflect on is the 2-year stint in L&D. While this experience is not inherently negative, it might raise questions about your trajectory. Adcoms may wonder whether the shift was driven by a slowdown in your IB career or by a strategic decision. Your application essays must clearly articulate how this phase complements your overall story and adds leadership and communication strengths that will enhance your post-MBA success in IB or strategic finance roles. This blog on Strengths and Weaknesses could be worth checking out!

ISB can be a good target, but with 9 years of experience, you are on the higher end of their typical age range. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but your application will need to emphasize leadership and scale of impact. A strong GRE score and clear articulation of your “Why MBA, Why Now” will be critical. HEC Paris and Imperial College London can be good fits too, especially given their openness to experienced professionals and strong finance placement. At HEC, international exposure and deal experience will be key to strengthening your candidacy. If you have worked on cross-border transactions, this should be highlighted. Imperial might be more forgiving on the GRE and is a strong brand in Europe for finance, though placement into front-end IB may require networking. IIMA PGPX can also be a good fit among your current targets. The program is designed for mid-to-senior-level professionals with substantial experience. You would need to demonstrate how your experience (especially the transition to L&D) aligns with your renewed goal to re-enter IB, while also showing the maturity and leadership that PGPX values.

Given your years of experience and goals, you may want to consider other global programs with strong finance recruiting and age flexibility, like INSEAD, Cambridge Judge, and Oxford Saïd.

Focus the next month on GRE prep, especially building quant strength. Simultaneously, begin introspecting on your career story and how to narrate the L&D switch effectively. Your age and experience are not liabilities per se, but they require a well-thought-out narrative that aligns career growth with post-MBA aspirations. Schools will ask: Why do you need an MBA now? How will it help you get where you want to go? Why did you step into L&D, and how does that make you a better leader?

Questions to Reflect On:
1)Can you point to deal-making or client engagement stories in IB that showcase leadership, ownership, and business impact?

2)What was the rationale behind your move into L&D, and how can you position it as a strength rather than a detour?

3)Are you geographically flexible post-MBA, or are you focused on returning to India or APAC?

If you’re open to it, we’d be happy to dive deeper into your profile to assess your chances. You can book a one-on-one profile evaluation with us anytime!

Cheers!

Hello, thanks for sharing your profile. Your 9 years in IB and domain-focused L&D pivot are impressive. But with a 315 GRE, you’ll need a 325+ to stay competitive for ISB, IIMs, and HEC, especially given your re-entry to front-end roles.

Let’s connect to craft a winning reapplication and school targeting strategy.

Hello Joe,

Your 705 GMAT Focus is solid, but the GPA of 3.1 is a red flag for top schools like Kellogg and Haas, especially given the competitive Indian applicant pool.

Your 4 years in tech with a consulting pivot goal is a common storyline, so differentiation will come down to leadership stories, international exposure, and strong essays. Schools like Anderson, Foster, McCombs, Tepper, and Ross are realistic, but Kellogg MBAi is extremely competitive.

Strengthening your academic profile with additional coursework (HBS CORe, MBA Math) would help mitigate the GPA. Your goals are achievable, but you need to highlight unique impact and leadership to stand out.

Let’s connect to shape your story and address the GPA gap directly.

Thanks for sharing your profile @JoeMama1607 ! You have a good standardized test (705 GMAT Focus, roughly ~750 Classic equivalent), which is a powerful signal of academic readiness and will open doors. You also have 4 years of tech work experience, which is in the sweet spot for consulting recruiting (many firms hire early-career MBAs). The clear risk is your GPA of 3.1, which is below the median at most top U.S. programs, that will require deliberate mitigation (context + subsequent quantitative proof + outstanding impact at work).

How Adcoms will read you:
Strengths: excellent GMAT, relevant tech experience, clear trajectory to tech strategy/AI leadership. Weaknesses: lower undergraduate GPA (raises academic-commitment questions), and (unless you show it) limited evidence of sustained leadership/impact beyond technical execution. With strong essays, LORs, and quant evidence (master’s/Certs/projects), you can neutralize the GPA concern, but it has to be addressed head-on, not hidden.

Overall: You can be in the competitive band for most targets and reach for top-tier schools with lower GPA medians. Execution (essays/recs/networking) will decide admit vs. reject.

Explain the GPA (briefly & honestly): Use the optional essay to provide context if there were extenuating circumstances. Don’t excuse; show growth since then (what you learned, how you improved academically/professionally). If you have recent coursework, MS grades, CFA/technical certificates, or high performance on work metrics, highlight them. Adcoms trust upward trajectories. Demonstrate leadership & client/strategic exposure: Show any work where you owned stakeholder management, drove business outcomes, pitched strategy, or led teams. If lacking, create a quick pro-bono consulting project or internal initiative to lead. Strong recommenders: Choose people who can speak to leadership, business impact, and potential. Give them metrics and stories to include. Connect with alumni and current students at each target school; use those conversations to tailor “Why X” essays and to get internal referrals/advocates.

Questions for you:
1) What’s your current role & title? Any promotions? Team size/budget you manage?
2) Give 3 recent achievements with numbers (impact, savings, revenue, efficiency).
3) Who are your proposed recommenders (titles/relationship)?
4) Any extenuating reason for the 3.1 GPA worth briefly contextualizing?
5) Are you open to adding one or two non-US schools (INSEAD, LBS) if you’re flexible geographically?

We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, professional experience, and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

@JoeMama1607
Assuming your college was average Tier-2 brand, your GMAT is strong, but the GPA is on the lower side.
I would even say with Goizueta, and Scheller you are aiming too low (even for Safety)
Career goals as presented here lack clarity
Also, I don't see specific ECs/ display of leadership and such.

If you are targeting R1 for these schools, you hardly have time to make things better. Compensating your application with compelling narratives would be critical for success

Hope that helps. Please submit your profile for a Free Assessment over a 1:1 call. https://theivyleagueedge.com/index.php/contactus/

I have 6+ years of Leadership Experience at Bajaj Auto in Sales, Digital Transformation and Network Planning & Expansion. I already have MBA from IIM Calcutta ( 2019 Passout ). I am targeting Round 1 applications for Top 1-Year MBA programs like Kellogg's 1 Year MBA, Yale MAM, Tepper Accelerated MBA & Emory One-Year MBA.

Hello Maurya,

Your case is unusual: you already hold an MBA from IIM Calcutta, which raises the question of why a second MBA is necessary. Top U.S. programs will want a very clear rationale beyond “career pivot.” Your 740 GMAT is excellent, and your leadership at Bajaj Auto across sales, digital, and expansion is strong.

However, U.S. adcoms may see your prior MBA as sufficient unless you frame your story around global exposure, U.S. placement into consulting, and skill gaps that your IIM MBA did not address.

Programs like Kellogg’s one-year MBA and Duke Accelerated MBA are designed for candidates like you, but you must explain the “second MBA” convincingly. Without that, your application will struggle even with strong credentials.

A second-MBA application requires a very precise positioning strategy. Let’s discuss how to craft that case.

Hi Maurya,

With 7 years of experience, it will be important to show your leadership skills and impact on teams/clients/organization impressively- and these are what will work very well for Kellogg and Duke- both programs high on collaboration, leadership and empathy.
Justifying a second MBA is not difficult, but yes, you must have your reasons that fit in well with your career vision and future career goals.
I'd be happy to have a chant. We helped someone crack Kellogg last year for his second MBA (and he was a reapplicant), So i'd be happy to share my insights with you should you have any difficult questions. You may also want to look into LBS Focus, you'll have to check though whether IIMC qualifies in their second MBA eligibility criteria, but any how impressive that you went to IIMC. Some of the best professionals i know and have worked with before I got into admissions consulting are from there. So, you have a strong lineage

I am looking for a second MBA after completing my MBA from a top 5 IIM. I have 4+ years of work experience as a Business Technology Analyst at a Big4 firm and Management Consulting Analyst post MBA at Accenture Strategy and Consulting. My academics are as follows: Class 10th - 10 CGPA, Class 12th - 93.8%, Undergrad- CGPA -8 (Department Rank 6th in a class of 55+), Postgrad - CGPA 7.01 (80.06%, top quartile in a batch of 550+ students). GRE: 331/340 (Q: 167, V: 164). I have won numerous quizzing competitions during my school and have become a quizmaster in my college. I have volunteered to teach underprivileged children during my free time while doing my college and have done free career analysis for many students and aspirants looking to make it big. Primary reasons to pursue second MBA are to shift my geography (primarily to Europe) and to change my function to sustainability (From High Tech industry). Work ex at Accenture has been highly relevant for post MBA experience like GTM Strategy, Competitor Analysis etc. to name a few. Have done a student exchange program in France for 4 months at a leading business school. Industries worked till now: Consumer Electronics, Travel, Healthcare, FMCG, Networking Equipment. Short term goals are to get into the world of Sustainability either in consulting or industry helping companies meet their ESG goals. Long term goals are to grow to a senior leadership role and lead a company's sustainability division. Know German (B1 Level), Japanese (JLPT N4). Additional scores: IELTS (8.5/9, CEFR - C2).

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, I see a rare profile that demonstrates a clear and justified case for a second MBA. Your functional pivot to sustainability makes for a strong reason, but your geographic shift would not go hand in hand as your reason for a second MBA. Your GRE score is strong too and strengthens your chances.

You’ve made strong use of your post-MBA consulting experience, especially with transferable strategy skills and competitor analysis. Your involvement in ECs like volunteering, quizzing, and mentoring further demonstrates a well-rounded profile. You will have to make your “Why second MBA” narrative strong, highlight the skills gap and industry shift clearly and authentically.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!
No pressure, no strings—just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

Thank you for sharing your profile @Nachtphonix. Good across all academic levels and an exceptional GRE score (331). An IELTS of 8.5 will reassure Adcoms of your communication skills, important for a second MBA. You can take a look at this blog.

Exchange program in France + multilingual exposure (French setting, German, Japanese) will resonate well with European schools, especially IMD, HEC, and Bocconi.

Accenture Strategy experience focused on GTM, competitor analysis, and cross-industry strategy is transferable to sustainability and ESG work. The rationale, geographic shift to Europe, and career function shift to sustainability are credible, especially when paired with your consulting exposure and growing ESG work relevance. Community service (teaching underprivileged children), career mentoring, and quizzing (both as participant and quizmaster) round out a socially aware and intellectually curious profile.

Second MBA Justification: This is your biggest hurdle. You must clearly articulate:
1. Why your first MBA didn’t meet your evolving professional goals (focus on career redirection, not dissatisfaction).
2. Why the second MBA in Europe is the most logical next step.
3. What you expect to gain in terms of industry/functional shift, international career tools, and networking that the first MBA didn’t provide.

Tip: Be transparent, but strategic, own your narrative. Most top European schools do accept second MBA applicants, but expect a strong case.

Sustainability pivot without direct experience: While you’ve worked across industries and functions that may touch ESG indirectly, adcoms will want to see- Clear projects, responsibilities, or initiatives related to ESG/sustainability. If possible, ESG-focused certifications or short-term courses would be good to show commitment.

Questions for you:
1. Can you identify and elaborate on specific ESG or sustainability-related projects you’ve done in consulting?
2. Would you be open to 1-year vs 2-year MBA formats (important in schools like IMD)?
3. Have you considered short-term international assignments or secondments pre-MBA to build ESG exposure?

We’d love to learn more about your journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hey @Nachtphonix,
1. Although your academic credentials seem to be excellent, you would need to align your career goals better.
2. On a secondary note, given you are seeking your 2nd MBA, statistically speaking your chances of success go lower. I would therefore strongly suggest you to seek expert professional help. Finally, in terms of employability, from my understanding you would do well to avoid Said & SDA Bocconi.
3. LOR will hopefully turn out well

Hope that helps. For a free, 1-to-1 profile review over the phone, please submit your profile on TheIvyLeagueEdge(dot)com/index(dot)php/contactus/

Hi Nachtphonix, This is Deepak Aggarwal from Career Launcher. Firstly, congratulations on building such a well-rounded and high-impact profile. With a strong academic track record, excellent GRE and IELTS scores, rich cross-functional experience in strategy and consulting, and meaningful contributions beyond work, you're in a great position to aim for top global MBA programs with a focus on Sustainability and Impact Leadership.

Your experience across industries and your passion for sustainability align well with the values and curriculum of schools like IMD, RSM, INSEAD, HEC Paris, Yale SOM, Berkeley Haas, Michigan Ross, Kellogg, NYU Stern, and others known for their leadership in ESG and sustainability-focused programs.

That said, the "Why a second MBA?" question will be the cornerstone of your application. Schools will look for depth in your reasoning—so it’s important to articulate: What specific skill or knowledge gaps you’ve identified through your current roles, How the second MBA will bridge those gaps and accelerate your career shift into sustainability., What impact do you hope to create in the ESG domain? Define your goals not just by the roles you want, but by the problems you want to solve and the change you aim to lead.

Your exchange experience in France, multilingual abilities (German B1, Japanese N4), and global exposure will further strengthen your case, especially for European schools. I’d also recommend proactively pursuing certifications, projects, or short-term internships in sustainability while planning your applications. These will not only validate your career goals but also demonstrate continued momentum in the right direction.

Hi, \ this is a classic second-MBA repositioning case.

Top 5 IIM + Accenture Strategy + Big 4 plus a 331 GRE gives you strong academic and professional credibility. Your geography/function shift into EU sustainability consulting is logical, and programs like HEC, IMD, and Said are natural fits. The 2nd MBA rationale will need to be airtight: emphasize the need for European networks, ESG specialization, and functional pivot.

SDA Bocconi and Rotterdam are realistic targets; HEC and IMD are attainable with strong storytelling. Use your exchange in France and language skills to show EU cultural fit.

This is a well-structured second-MBA profile. With sharp rationale and leadership metrics, it can land top European admits.

After 5 years in working in investment banking in a large (but not bulge bracket) bank, I am now looking to pivot towards investment management (specifically private credit) - ideally through a M8 MBA or INSEAD

Hi, this is a high-caliber finance profile.

Five years in IB plus a 755 GMAT Focus puts you in the super competitive range for M7 and INSEAD. The pivot to private credit is logical and will resonate with Booth, Wharton, and Sloan, especially if you can highlight deal exposure and underwriting judgment. For HBS and GSB, you’ll need to layer in leadership beyond transactions, mentorship, initiative, or industry impact.

Your current bank’s brand (if not BB) won’t hurt much with a top-tier score and clear trajectory. LBS and INSEAD are strong Europe options, with strong buy-side placement. Haas and Yale can also be value-add with their ESG and alternative investing angles.

You have the stats and story for top programs, execution will determine how high you land.
