Hello JD17,

Your IB + Big 4 M&A background is well-aligned with the finance-heavy European MBA programs you’re targeting.

However, the 655 GMAT Focus is a red flag, especially for LBS, IESE, and Judge programs where finance applicants from India face stiff competition and typically post 695+ scores.

Your GPA is solid, and your deal experience adds weight, but without a higher GMAT or a compelling quant-alternative (CFA L2+, high rigor coursework), you’re at risk of getting filtered early.

If you’re serious about staying in IB and maximizing ROI, retaking the GMAT should be non-negotiable. The rest of your profile shows direction and strength, need the test to back it up.

Let’s talk strategy for a retake and optimize your application timing.

Thank you for sharing your profile @JD17. You come with 6 years of experience, split between investment banking at India’s largest private sector bank and 3 years in Deal Advisory at a Big 4 firm. This is highly relevant and directly aligned with your post-MBA goal of continuing in investment banking, which lends clarity and strength to your overall narrative. Your GPA of 8.16 is competitive for most European business schools, assuming it is from a reputable institution. However, your GMAT Focus score of 655 is low. If you have the time to retake the test and can push the score above 685, it could strengthen your application. From a demographic standpoint, being an Indian male applicant with a finance background does place you in a highly competitive pool. To stand out, you’ll need to highlight what differentiates you from similar profiles. Examples could include unique deal exposure, cross-border transaction experience, or leadership in internal initiatives. If you've led efforts around digital transformation, created efficiencies in deal processes, or mentored team members, those could be valuable leadership stories to bring into your application. International exposure is an important component for European schools. If you’ve worked on cross-border deals, collaborated with international teams, or served clients across regions, be sure to highlight this in your essays and interviews. If you haven’t had this exposure yet, even small experiences, like presenting to global stakeholders or being on multinational teams, can help build that narrative. Be sure to connect your post-MBA goals with the specific recruiting strengths and networks of each school.

A few key questions to reflect on: Have you taken ownership of deals or primarily supported them? Can you showcase leadership beyond your job description?

With a higher GMAT and a strategically crafted application, you’ll be well-positioned at your target schools. If you'd like, feel free to Book a profile evaluation session.

We are hosting a Coffee Session: “GMAT Strategy & B-School Application Tips from Experts” on 25th July, 2025 | 9.00 PM IST | 11.00 AM ET. Know more details.

Cheers!

Hi @Ish03
A 3.6 GPA is very competitive. But a 665 GMAT FE places you at the bottom edge for INSEAD, LBS, and to an extent even ISB. Consider retaking the GMAT and aim for a 685+ FE score if you want a good shot in these three schools. Also can you give some context into your work experiences so far like the firms you've worked with, the industry you work in, your roles and responsibilities and impact, your short and long term goals, undergrad specialization, any extracurricular involvement, etc. Given that VC is niche, it's really important to understand the kind of background you have.

If you'd like to discuss these aspects over a 1-on-1 conversation, then please feel free to reach out to us through one of our following coordinates!

@ma286 - Your GMAT score is the primary challenge.

Your strong academic background combined with 5 years of experience in financial services shows potential. And your career progression, advancing five positions to Senior Associate, alongside leading impactful projects, provides a solid professional arc.

It'd be crucial to have a strong narrative covering your experiences, goals, and 'why MBA'.

Despite your strong profile, a higher GMAT score (675+) would substantially increase your chances, both for admissions and scholarships. Alternatively, add some schools in the Reach/ Safe category if you decide to go ahead with this score.

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks strong on the surface. As a female candidate from Peru with a background in finance, tech-driven project leadership, and a clear post-MBA vision, you're offering a mix of diversity, experience, and direction that adcoms at top MBA programs value.

Your academic credentials look solid, plus European Management with international experience in France gives you global exposure and academic depth. Your GMAT score also looks decent. Now, you will have to focus on the rest of your application. Your profile also shows clear upward mobility, rising through five positions in a top Latin American financial services firm over 5+ years and currently holding a senior associate role with leadership over a 70 client portfolio. Plus, your volunteering with a women-in-finance nonprofit also adds a strong community and diversity angle.

Both Fuqua and Ross are excellent fits for your background and goals. They value collaborative leadership, diverse experiences, and socially engaged candidates, all of which you bring.

Can you highlight any international client exposure or multi-market strategy experience that strengthens your global fit?

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!
No pressure, no strings—just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

MA286- that's a very strong profile. Specifically what I really like:
1. the international immersion during undergrad. B-schools appreciate international exposure and global orientation, and a year abroad shall serve you well in demonstrating key interpersonal skills and adaptability.
2. 5 promotions in as many years is nifty. let this reflect particularly in your resume and the recommendation as well. in addition, show your achievements and impact in each of these positions.
3. the career goals tie well with your past experiences and the short term to long term career path makes sense. be sure to put it all together coherently in the application, with logical explanations about the career transitions.

It will help to know about your work achievements and the scale at which you are able to have an impact. For example, serving 70 clients sounds like a big number, but equally crucial is to know what value of business do they bring. even for your other work related pointers, focus on the $$ value of your achievements for your resume bullets to shine.

Regarding b-schools, Fuqua and Ross are good choices. You can add some more b-schools to your R1 calendar. Or, do you plan to wait to hear back from Fuqua and then decide your application strategy? That may push your applications to R2 as Fuqua EA results would be out by 16th Oct.

Hi there, thanks for the detailed profile.

Impressive work progression: 5 promotions, client leadership, cross-country project work, all strong.

But 645 GMAT Focus is okayish for Fuqua/Ross if you’re aiming for consulting, especially with no MBB or global brand name pre-MBA.

Women from Latin America are underrepresented, which helps, but GMAT might block scholarship or even interview invites at top schools.

If you can push closer to 675–690, it’ll unlock more doors. Your fintech consulting goal is credible and aligns well with your story, just make sure your app doesn’t read too internally focused.

Let’s reframe your work wins into external impact and revisit the GMAT decision.

Thank you for sharing your detailed profile @ma286, it's evident that you've built a strong and upwardly mobile career in financial services, and your aspiration to pivot into consulting through an MBA is thoughtful. With 6 years of experience at one of Latin America’s top financial services institutions, you've demonstrated impressive progression - 5 promotions and recognition as both Analyst and Executive of the Year. This, along with your leadership on tech-driven projects such as dashboard implementation, credit planning, and client communication automation, positions you as someone deeply involved in business transformation. Your international academic exposure through a dual degree in Economics and European Management, including a year in France, adds a global dimension that top business schools value. Being actively involved in a nonprofit organization that supports women in finance also enhances your profile, showcasing your commitment to community impact and leadership.

However, one area of concern is that your GMAT Focus score of 645 is on the lower side for top-tier U.S. MBA programs like Fuqua and Ross. If possible, it would be highly beneficial to retake the exam and aim for a 20 or 30+ points. If retaking isn’t feasible, you’ll need to compensate with exceptional essays, strong letters of recommendation, and a clear, impactful narrative about your consulting pivot. Since you don’t have prior consulting experience, admissions committees will want to see how your current role, particularly your leadership in digital and operational transformation, can translate to client-facing work in consulting. You’ll also need to clearly articulate why consulting is the right next step, how your experience will help you succeed, and what long-term vision you’re working toward. You can take a look at this blog on How to bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals? and a success story.

Fuqua’s collaborative, team-driven culture aligns well with your leadership style and cross-functional work. Ross values action-based learning and impact, which your project work and nonprofit engagement support. Additionally, you may want to consider other programs that have strong consulting and fintech placement and may offer more flexibility around GMAT scores, such as Emory Goizueta, UNC Kenan-Flagler, and IESE. If your GMAT improves, even Kellogg, INSEAD, or Yale SOM could be stretch options. Applying in early round and Round 1 will increase your chances for both admission and scholarships. Finally, make sure to quantify your project outcomes where possible, begin networking with current students or alumni from your target schools, and choose recommenders who can speak clearly about your leadership and potential in consulting.

You're in a good position overall, a well-executed application strategy and possible test score improvement could make you a competitive candidate across top global programs. Let me know if you'd like help with school selection, crafting essays, resume, LOR or building your post-MBA consulting story. Feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Hi there, thanks for the detailed profile.

Goldman + Big 4 + solid academics make you competitive for ISB and INSEAD.

You’ve got enough work experience (especially with PM and client-facing consulting exposure) to justify the MBA.

But with no test score listed, hard to assess competitiveness fully so, aim for 685+ GMAT Focus to stay safe for ISB/INSEAD. LBS and HEC could work too if you want a Euro angle.

Entrepreneurial intent post-MBA is okay but position it as “scale first, startup later” to avoid red flags.

Let’s structure your story as “tech strategist with entrepreneurial depth.”

Thanks, Ameer. Could you elaborate on "Entrepreneurial intent post-MBA is okay but position it as “scale first, startup later” to avoid red flags."? How is my entrepreneurial intent a red flag? And by scale first, startup later you mean an investment in professional growth (therefore the MBA) toward a larger eventual goal of entrepreneurship? Meanwhile, would love you hear more, so I'll book some time on your calendar for a quick discussion.

Hey
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, I see a strong and well-rounded profile including 5 years of solid work experience.
Your work 4 as a Product Manager at Goldman Sachs followed by Big 4 consulting shows a rare mix of tech-product and business-strategy experience. That blend is highly attractive to adcoms.

Do you have a mock score yet? Or when are you planning to appear for your GMAT/GRE exam?

Your post-MBA goal to upskill, reposition into stronger roles, and eventually build a company looks clear and believable, especially with your current blend of experience. INSEAD and ISB are especially known for enabling entrepreneurship through peer networks, funding ecosystems, and accelerated formats.

Have you led cross-functional or global teams in either PM or consulting that can showcase people leadership?

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!
No pressure, no strings—just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.

Thanks! I'll be reaching out. My mock scores range between 615-655 (as of a few days ago). I have led scrum teams in the capacity of Product Manager if that counts,

Hi @DrMock,

You have a strong and well-rounded profile with 5 years of experience spanning both product management at Goldman Sachs and a recent move into Big 4 consulting—this blend of strategy and execution is valuable for MBA admissions, especially with your goal of starting your own venture post-MBA.

Aiming to stay in consulting right after MBA is credible. the same Your academic track record is consistently strong and leadership in extracurriculars adds further depth. ISB is a great fit given your goals and profile. For INSEAD and LBS, your work experience and entrepreneurial goals align well, but consider strengthening your case with a competitive GMAT (target 685+ if not already taken). Your profile is compelling across your target schools, especially if you clearly articulate how the MBA will accelerate your transition into high-impact leadership and eventual entrepreneurship.

You state "from consulting" --> "to consulting." How do you describe 'better roles,' doc? What upskilling are you looking to achieve from the MBA? Be it ISB or any international school, your 'Why MBA?' will be crucial (an understatement). Your mock scores won't cut much ice. And if you are gunning for R1, then time is fast running out for you. Without your final score in hand, your school selection remains under a question mark too. Technically, you can't even do your deep research, attend webinars/events, network, and prepare for your essays/LoRs.
Happy to speak if you wish to.
