Female lending lawyer from India, looking to pivot to strategy and impact consulting in Europe/UK. 9 years experience with some of the biggest financial institutions in the country. Currently working in the India office of the world's largest banks. Also run my own wildlife travel startup focusing on conducting wildlife tours across India and generating revenue for local communities and vendors. Very good Extra-curriculars throughout my school years . Led volunteering and DEI initiatives in my workplace(s). Looking to get an MBA to address certain skill gaps in my resume and build a strong network that will help me deep-dive into the impact consulting space.

Hi. Do you have a great profile and the very strong one. Business schools like people with law agrees and so do employers. They would love to have you. However, they will have to hesitate and balance your below average score… to admit you, they will have to pad your score with other folks scores.

I’m not sure if you can try the GRE or the focus edition. Even getting 30 more points would put you into the clearly yes instead of the maybe yes category.

Hi BB, thank you so much for the insights. After 3 attempts, I feel like I’ve hit the ceiling on the gmat score (went from 620-660-670). I don’t know if I have enough time for the GRE but you’re right, the below average score likely got me the first reject. I’ll try to give a couple of GRE mocks and see if the format is more suited for me. Thank you again for the assessment!

If you’re open to taking mocks, try the focus. It is different enough scoring to potentially make a difference the question is which way the difference goes… 🤷‍♂️

@asp0409 - adding to bb's points,

1. What was your Q/ V split? While this score "could" work for some schools, the odds are lower and it'd be better to improve it (Focus or GRE). Highlighting why a lower score isn't a true representation of your potential (e.g. if you took Quant courses in undergrad, or worked in quant-heavy projects etc., or similarly verbal) in the Optional Essays could help offset some concerns.

2. It would also be crucial to have a strong narrative covering your motivation for consulting and your transferrable skills i.e. from your roles/ start-up experiences. For example, I had a classmate at HEC who had a law background and transitioned to consulting post MBA. His "hook" was his experiences working with Financial Services clients, and his knowledge of the sector, which he then used to target consulting firms that had clientele in that sector.
