I have 5 years of post-graduate experience, currently working at a battery startup. I've switched companies four times, each transition resulting in a higher position than the last. I graduated from a top 5 university in Canada with a degree in Engineering and completed an additional year specializing in business management.
I have 3 years of experience as a Project Manager in the nuclear industry in Canada, focused on capital projects, and 3 years as an engineer in a US-based battery startup, working on greenfield capital projects. A key accomplishment includes helping to develop the battery supply chain in the US, and bring battery manufacturing to US from China and Asia. All project sizes that I have worked on have been $100M to $1B.
I hold PMP and Google Project Management certifications. I also founded and ran a non-profit for 5 years (gave TedX talk, presented it in multiple conferences, went to multiple schools and presented it). During university, I completed a 4-month internship in Germany. I have traveled to over 40 countries and am a licensed private pilot in US and Canada.
After completing my MBA, my goal is to move into business strategy roles in the US energy industry - Battery, or Nuclear.
You have a compelling profile with excellent academic performance, relevant work experience, and leadership in both industry and non-profit sectors. A 3.9 GPA from a top Canadian university in engineering and business management showcases your strong academic background. Your five years in the energy sector (nuclear and battery industries) align well with your post-MBA goals, particularly your contributions to large-scale capital projects ($100M to $1B) and developing a critical U.S. supply chain. Your leadership in highly regulated industries, along with PMP and Google Project Management certifications, further demonstrates your expertise. Founding a non-profit and delivering a TEDx talk highlight your entrepreneurial spirit and leadership experience. Your international exposure across the U.S., Canada, and Germany, combined with extensive travel, indicates strong cultural adaptability, essential for top MBA programs. Being a licensed private pilot adds a unique personal dimension to your application. While your GMAT Focus score of 665 is respectable, addressing potential concerns about your four job switches in five years as intentional career moves will be vital. You should emphasize why an MBA is crucial for your transition into program management roles in the energy sector. Programs with strong connections to energy and sustainability may be your best fit.
For school selection, focus on full-time programs with strong networks in energy, sustainability, and leadership. While part-time programs at Kellogg and Booth are excellent, full-time options provide a more immersive experience that aligns with your desire for deeper engagement and career pivot potential. Both schools are well-regarded for consulting and general management but may have slightly lower placements in the energy sector. Your project management expertise will be an asset; emphasize your leadership and unique contributions in applications. Additionally, you may consider programs with strong ties to energy, like McCombs, Duke Fuqua, or Michigan Ross, which excel in general management and may be more accessible for your profile.
Overall we suggest that in the essays you should focus on the impact made in large-scale capital projects, leadership in developing the U.S. battery supply chain, and entrepreneurial experience in founding the non-profit. Be prepared to explain the reasons behind frequent job changes, highlighting career growth and positioning each move as a step towards greater responsibility and leadership. Reach out to alumni and current students from energy or sustainability-focused MBA programs to gather insights and strengthen applications. This can also help with identifying target schools that align with career goals.
Applying to a mix of competitive full-time programs that align with career goals and energy sector strengths would provide the best chances for success.
