I've been looking into some trends with GMAT test takers over the past few years, and it appears that fewer and fewer people are taking the GMAT every year.
Here’s the data I found:
I'm curious—what do you all think is driving this decline? Is it because more people are opting for other standardized tests like the GRE? Or are fewer people applying to business school in general?
Here’s the data I found:
- TY2023: 74,810 unique candidates took the GMAT, sitting for a total of 108,851 exams.
- TY2019: 150,244 unique candidates took the GMAT, sitting for a total of 225,621 exams.
I'm curious—what do you all think is driving this decline? Is it because more people are opting for other standardized tests like the GRE? Or are fewer people applying to business school in general?

That’s a good question. The number of tests has gone done even more by the way. From about 190k to 65k.
The first instinct is to say Jerry is the corporate but if you check the jury volume you’ll see the exact same pattern, about 60 or 70% decline...
I think The biggest culprit are the economy and schools providing Test waivers. There has been no lack of M7 applicants or Top 15. But there are multiple forces that play as well because more people apply to more schools these days. Looking at the trend and GMAT club, in the past people would apply to five or maybe seven schools and now it’s 7 to 12. So while the wrong number of applicants may not increase, the applications are going through the roof...

I agree with BB , additional one more point could be because of alternate test score option of GRE tests , GMAT EA as well as most of schools are accepting the same not to forget is exam waiver option....
Best scale to measure would be change in admission applicant pool school wise who submitted application for course that way one can gauge whether people have moved to alternate exam option or not..
