I am a senior in college currently working on applications to some of the deferred MBA programs. I recently turned down a full ride offer from my home school (top 75) in order to pursue higher tier b schools. However, due to coronavirus it has been tougher to navigate the job search, and I am still working on my story of “what am I going to do during these next 2-5 years of deferral.”

Obviously I am too deep to pull my applications and find scholarships to a lower tier program right out of college, but I was simply hoping to hear insights and opinions about the current landscape of the deferred programs - whether it’s a good time to pursue these programs, whether it’ll be tougher or easier to be admitted, or even what I should tell adcoms as someone who does not yet have a job offer.

Thank you for reading and offering wisdom!

Joel

Hi Joel, my view is that this is just as good a time as any (if not better) to apply for a deferred program. With the current situation, it is certainly understandable that you don't have your post-graduation plans completely sorted out. The key will be to lay out your desired path (perhaps even a Plan A and Plan B) and the steps you will take to achieve it. Then (and importantly) lean heavily into the leadership experienced you've gained to date through campus involvement, etc. to demonstrate your potential. Tough to advise beyond that without more details of your profile, but please reach out if you'd like to discuss further!

Thank you all for the replies. I am a college senior, white male from U.S. state school studying Marketing with 3.9 GPA and 720 GMAT, weighted much higher on verbal. During school I started a fraternity that now has almost 100 members, Vice President of black gospel choir, worked as a youth pastor, music minister, taught music lessons, sold life insurance, and worked as a college consultant/intern to an entrepreneur who sold his last business at 100million in sales. Kind of an eclectic background, still working on my career goals (even as my first application is almost due).

Let me know if you have any more questions about my profile - I think I covered most of it, though. TheNightKing yes, that's correct. VantagePointKatie that's good to hear, and I'll definitely use that strategy!

joelish Those are really solid extracurriculars, nice work!! Your GPA is strong and GMAT is solid, although the latter is slightly below average for the top schools (deferred programs tend to even exceed the overall MBA stat). How many times have you taken the GMAT? If only once or if you think there is more room to improve, it might make sense to retake (or note in your app that you plan to do so once the online option is available). Let me know if you have any other questions as you work through everything and good luck once again!

VantagePointKatie thank you! I took the GMAT once before and got a 610, canceled it, then I got a 720 a month later (in November). At this point in April I doubt I could retake and do better without a lot more studying, lol.
