I was just wondering who decides here in the website what is the level of difficulty presented with each question?
The reason why I'm asking is since I've recently taken the gnat prerp test and I got a score of less that 300,
Now I'm assuming that most of the questions that I had were at least in sub600 level especially the 2nd half of my questions
surprisingly when I checked the questions here in gmatclub I found out that most of the questions I had are being categorized as 600-700 level which makes me wondering a little bit and in fact question number 35 that I had had to do with standard deviation and here in the web it's under the 600-700 umbrella [or maybe the gmat prep test is not reliable!?]
I would be very happy to get an explanation
Thanks a lot
Hi. It would be good to have a specific example to get more specific (always helps on the GMAT to get specific numbers to validate your answers/equations).
You have a good question - the question difficulty is determined by the users who attempt those questions in comparison to the universe of questions available on GMAT Club and performance on those respective questions. It is a complex algorithm that resembles the IMBD formula a bit with some tweaks but basically depending on the number of sessions, results, and time spent on each question, we determine whether it falls under which percentile/difficulty level. We publish it on the timer and also synch up the tags. You will see that questions are rated on a 10-90th percentile while tags are only on a 3-degree levels (sub 600, 600-700, and 700+).
The 600-700 level includes from 34th to 64th percentile of difficulty, and you are better off using the timer more exact difficulty parameter as you will get more precise and more exact difficulty rating.
Best Regards,
