I heard that one of the reasons to wait for R2 is experience. Somebody on BW forum wrote nice post that experience gained during R1 application (not only essays, but also interview) is very helpful for R2 schools. The bottom line from the author (supported with other experienced applicants) was to wait with your top schools till R2 and learn the process in R1 with 'not so top' schools. I think that balancing both approaches should work the best. I plan to split my 4 top schools between R1 and R2.

I would say it's probably getting too late to try 6 apps in Round 1 if you don't have at least 1 or 2 finished by now. I think you'll find that it 'usually' takes about 3 weeks for the first app and then 1.5 - 2 weeks for each additional app. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it's going to be really tough. Remeber, you also have to allocate time to prepare your recommenders and asking them to do 6 schools between now and mid-October is asking alot.

I don't see any problem doing all your apps in R1, but I can also understand putting 1-2 off until R2. It really just comes down to are you ready to submit when the R1 deadline comes? If not then push them to R2, if so, then go ahead and submit.

Think about your recommenders as well, they might need windows of 3-4 weeks each for every set of recommendations they prepare. So yeah, it's all fine and dandy if you're a really prolific writer and can finish 1 application a week, but your recommenders might get really mad if you asked the same of them.

If you haven't started yet, then probably not. However, if you have already started, then it is possible. I am applying to 6 schools in round 1. I started profiling for my essays in early June and began writing the essays in July. I have 3/4 schools completed at this time with just a few minor tweaks over the next few weeks. What also makes it easier for me is that two of my schools have late October/early November R1 deadlines. I have one recommender writing for all 6 with two others dividing up the 2nd set of recommendations. I notified them about 2 months ago and gave them all the information they needed about a month ago so there should be no problem there.

If you already know why you want to apply at each school and can customize the essays well, it can be done in a shorter amount of time given then amount of overlap between most schools' essays. While I'll have close to 30 essays when this is said and done, I've probably written about 10 unique essays with multiple variations of each one.

I would never 'wait' for R2. R1 is certainly the best time to submit. I would only push a few schools out if they were either a) not ready to submit or b) not finished because the others took so long. I'm saying that it's not worth it to submit in R1 if the essays aren't good enough (because you rushed them trying to submit 6 in R1) to get you in the school. Why waste the application fee if the Adcoms are going to take one look and ding you?
