Dengue fever is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. On the island of Gilmoria, extensive efforts have been made to prevent mosquitoes from entering buildings, so mosquitoes primarily bite people outside. Gilmoria’s current rainy season has been particularly severe, resulting in an increase in the number of pools of standing water, in which mosquitoes breed. Therefore, when new statistics are published, they will probably indicate an increase in the number of cases of Dengue fever in Gilmoria.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. The increased humidity resulting from a severe rainy season does not cause people to stay inside more often.

B. The healthcare system on Gilmoria has sufficient resources to treat a higher number of cases of Dengue fever than it did in previous years.

C. The number of mosquitoes on Gilmoria has increased by at least as large a percentage as has the number of cases of Dengue fever.

D. During the dry season, some of the pools of standing water do not completely dry up.

E. The severity of the Dengue cases this year will be unchanged

Contender. IF people will stay inside, there will be no increase in the no of cases.

B. The healthcare system on Gilmoria has sufficient resources to treat a higher number of cases of Dengue fever than it did in previous years.
Weakens the conclusion. Drop it.

C. The number of mosquitoes on Gilmoria has increased by at least as large a percentage as has the number of cases of Dengue fever.
We are interested in no of cases. Drop it.

D. During the dry season, some of the pools of standing water do not completely dry up.
Dry Season. Irrelevant. Drop it.

E. The severity of the Dengue cases this year will be unchanged
Severity. Irrelevant. Drop it.

Answer: A

Argument will need this to eliminate the possibility that more mosquitos indicate that more people are exposed to mosquitos ,and thus a larger number of ppl likely to get bitten

As an assumption, it must link premise and conclusion. Only option A does that.

Premise : Extensive efforts have been made to prevent mosquitoes from entering buildings, so mosquitoes primarily bite people outside.

Assumption : The increased humidity resulting from a severe rainy season does not cause people to stay inside more often.

Conclusion : Therefore, when new statistics are published, they will probably indicate an increase in the number of cases of Dengue fever in Gilmoria.

Type- assumption
Boil it down- when new statistics are published, they will probably indicate an increase in the number of cases of Dengue fever in Gilmoria.

A. The increased humidity resulting from a severe rainy season does not cause people to stay inside more often. - Correct - on negating this, the argument falls apart

B. The healthcare system on Gilmoria has sufficient resources to treat a higher number of cases of Dengue fever than it did in previous years. - Irrelevant - whether Gilmoria has sufficient resources to treat a higher number of cases has no bearing on the number of cases

C. The number of mosquitoes on Gilmoria has increased by at least as large a percentage as has the number of cases of Dengue fever. - Incorrect - we are comparing % increase in number of mosquitoes and the number of cases of dengue fever in this option, but one mosquito can bite multiple people and thus spread the fever to many

D. During the dry season, some of the pools of standing water do not completely dry up. - Out of scope - The argument talks about the rainy season

E. The severity of the Dengue cases this year will be unchanged - Irrelevant

Answer A
