Re: Despite owning a fashion garments outlet, his sartorial [#permalink]

I narrowed it down to C and E as you did.

But I think Choice C is missing a Possesive pronoun his.

Despite his owning a fashion garments outlet, .... is likely the right way to write this sentence

I think the second part of C is also wordy

his sartorial sense can at ...

is definitely preferred over

he has a sartorial sense that can at ..

So E is the preferred answer.

I am no grammar expert - so take this with a pinch of salt.

(E) it is..

About other choices:
(A): Again Prepositional Phrase "Despite....." should be in Possessive form. Using "his" 'after Despite would have made it better.
(B): "him" Objective case. We need Possessive Case.
(D): Changes the meaning. Original Sentence does not want to convey that "he can describe..."

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Actually I saw one more very similar question. Unfortunately I did not bookmark it. In that question too, the right answer had a structure similar to that of E. And the closest second had a structure similar to that of C.

So, looks like ETS prefers E's structure to C's.

Its funny how a non-native speaker, such as myself, tries to understand these complex constructs using pattern matching. I dont know the names of these constructs but I recognize the patterns.

In the hind sight E looks correct

use of restrictive clause in C sounds he also has another sense which is different from the one in question.

Re: Despite owning a fashion garments outlet, his sartorial [#permalink]
I also picked C.

but after reading the explanations, I understood that there should be an HIS in the sentence to make it right.

also,

I don't know if anybody did the same mistake,
but I crossed out E, (didnt even read it), as it had his after the coma, which told me it wasn't relating to the subject, but I made the mistake in not looking at the first part of the sentence, which changed the sentece structure. allowing "his"
