There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
I have been preparing for GMAT for more than a year but continue to struggle to make progress especially in the verbal section. After months of preparation on the bus to work, in the breaks at work, I took my GMAT two days ago and scored a disappointing 510 Q41 V20. I could not believe the score because I was expecting to break at V30 or 600 (my highest so far is 560 Q42 V24 but scoring has been going down hill). I have taken plenty of practice tests and scored on average 620-670. But I don't seem to translate my ability to the real test. I am seeking help because I feel lost in this standardized test prep. My realistic target score is 660 Q45 V34 and am willing to give another try in another month or two. Can somebody recommend what resources to use? How can I identify and target my weakness? I want to know a good process to improve. I can even send the assessment report for my Manhattan CAT to help anyone understand where I stand. I have been thinking about tutor but don't know if that's right move. I have Manhattan books and e-GMAT subscription that I can definitely review more thoroughly. I appreciate your thought and comment. Thanks!
Michael

Sorry to hear that - but your goal is definitely achievable. Before you continue doing what you've been doing before, consider adjusting your thought process slightly. Sometimes a few adjustments in terms of what to look for, or your sense of timing, or little things that increase your confidence that a certain answer choice is wrong --- can add up to make significant differences in your end result. The key is to be able to see these things that you may not be seeing now.
Certainly also take into consideration the psychological elements of the test. Extreme positivity, cited in this blog post here: https://www.gmatpill.com/about/studying- ... trategies/ -- is also something you should keep in mind.
Hi pal, It´s been 1 and a half month since your original post and I don´t know where you are standing right now...
However if you bought your subscription to e-GMAT, you should definitely score somewhere in the 30s in Verbal. Listen to those guys. They know stuff.
My only advice is that in Verbal there are obviously things that are more important than others. If I were you I would devote most of time on SC, which is the easiest section to improve upon. Just by understanding the concepts of Modifiers, Parallelism, and Structure in a rock solid way, you should see your score improve by some points.
I realized that your question about identifying and targeting your weakness has never been answered. If you haven't already, start keeping an error log (samples can be seen here: gmat-error-log-86232.html). This should help you identify your weakness and why you've been answering questions incorrectly.
I don't know if you're still considering hiring a tutor. If so, feel free to sign up for a free trial of the Economist GMAT Tutor where you'll have access to one of our online tutors: https://econgm.at/freetrialoffer. See if this approach works for you!
Hope all is well and that studying is going well, Jessica
