Here are some diagrams that GMAT PILL uses:

The visual diagram approach is an approach that GMAT PILL specializes in for CR. Certainly, you shouldn't spend a lot of time diagramming - but during practice, it helps you think and visualize what is going on so you can make sense of the passage and question.

Thanks sunnyboy and GMATPill. This is very interesting; while I am not struggling with accuracy in CR, but perhaps for a few tough ones, this could definitely come in handy.

In my experience, effective diagramming/note-taking on CR varies by person. Some do heaving diagramming, some do nothing, and others do simple note-taking. Heavy diagramming can be very helpful in answering the question correctly, but that level of diagramming can make it difficult for some people to finish on time. Doing nothing suits well those people with strong grasp of logic because they save time that can be applied to eliminating answer choices, but most people who are out there doing nothing on CR don't have a strong grasp of logic. The happy medium of simple note-taking and identification of the conclusion seems to be the best approach for the majority of people. It keeps them engaged in the passage, helps ID the conclusion, and preserves time for working through the answer choices.
