I thought the main function of consultants was to be essay editors. Is that not the case?

Nope, but I probably would have if I could have afforded it. I mainly just conferred with my girlfriend on the overall themes of my essays.

I am not sure - I always thought a consultant interviewed you, helped you craft your essays by pointing out your strengths and weaknesses, helped you focus on areas of your app that need improving (Ex. pointing out you need a higher GMAT score), mock interviews for a specific school, etc. Accepted.com has packages for specific programs that take you from starting point to finish line, holding your hand throughout. To me that is a consultant.

Someone who reads your essays and edits general grammar and some minor feedback would be an editor...

As an international applicant, I used one to find out if I would be competitive applying to some schools in the US. I wanted to know if I had a shot or if I would be wasting my time and money.

Well I guess I should rephrase the question to be: Did you pay anyone to help you with your application? (excluding of course GMAT prep)

Tuqiri is a fluffybunny. The sooner he buggers off to league, the better.

I only used a consultant to gauge the strength of my candidacy. That was all.

Oh. Well. I read this only after submitting my vote. So, anyone who was going to vote "No" please vote "Yes" :-D
Yeah, I did use services of mbagameplan.com for essay editing.

I was contacted by a consultant who virtually "guaranteed" admissions (or 100% refund) at a few top 10 schools for $7500~$15,000. The guy is an HSB grad with lots of pull amongst several different adcoms.

In short, I denied his services because I don't think it is ethical to buy one's way into a top program. My school ranks in the top 30 and I'm perfectly content knowing that I got through on my own (with the support of some solid LORs, or course).

Yep, visited three schools (two backup) and stopped short of two more after receiving an admit from my target school.

Ended up shelling out an extra $125 for "economy plus" seats between Osaka-Seattle and they were much more comfortable than standard coach. Saving the FF miles for my wife's ticket at the end of the year.

How are your apps coming along Johnny? Any new news?

GMATT73 - Still playing the waiting game here, no news yet!

Well sounds like the seat upgrade wasn't too expensive, and sounds like you avoided getting one of those deadly blood clot things in your legs, so I would say that was money well spen!

Keep us posted on your progress buddy.

After picking a United ground staff's brain for 30 minutes, she gave me some good advice on how to increase our chances of getting bumped into biz class.

Here's the link FYI. https://www.gmatclub.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=42082
