I believe Surmise and Assumption are synonyms - both mean 'a result arrived at after considering available (sometimes incomplete) evidence'.

Although this may not directly lead you to your answer, I checked the Thesaurus to make sure, and here are the results -

Synonyms: assumption, attempt, conjecture, deduction, guess, guesstimate*, guesswork, hunch, hypothesis, idea, inference, notion, opinion, possibility, presumption, shot, sneaking suspicion*, speculation, stab, supposition, suspicion, theory, thought

Antonyms: calculation, knowledge, measurement

Thanks a lot! I recently saw a GMAT question that asked me to pick the best surmise and I opted for the option that had the premise! One more way ETS/GMAT stumps you as you need to understand the meaning of a surmise to get the correct answer!

By the way, can you let me know what's the difference between a presumption and an assumption?

googled it ....found this link useful

basically presume indicates a sense of audacity while assume puts you more on the defensive end...
