I can't figure out what's the difference between a surmise and an assumption. Some books state that surmise is a statement explicitly stated in the passage whereas assumption is never stated and one has to read between lines to find an assumption.
Is the above-mentioned distinction between surmise and assumption correct, or am I missing something?

I believe Surmise and Assumption are synonyms - both mean 'a result arrived at after considering available (sometimes incomplete) evidence'.
Although this may not directly lead you to your answer, I checked the Thesaurus to make sure, and here are the results -
Synonyms: assumption, attempt, conjecture, deduction, guess, guesstimate*, guesswork, hunch, hypothesis, idea, inference, notion, opinion, possibility, presumption, shot, sneaking suspicion*, speculation, stab, supposition, suspicion, theory, thought
Antonyms: calculation, knowledge, measurement
