The overarching theme about Duke is the "Team Fuqua" concept. Obviously, a lot of people find that very appealing - but I think they key is that pretty much everyone that chooses to attend Duke has bought into the concept before stepping on campus. It seems to be a great idea, but for people that don't like to have sunshine blown up their butt all day (couldn't think of a better way to put it), it can be a little overbearing.
If you browse the BW forums, I think you'll find that Darden & Tuck also have large groups of enthusiastic fans. Each of the schools offers a somewhat different culture, but I believe the common theme is that they are each somewhat remote and most students don't have prior ties to the area. So, there's much more emphasis on working and socializing with fellow students.
This contrasts with big city schools where many students will drift off and hang out with friend they used to work with or go to school with. In cities like NY, LA, SF, Boston & Chicago, there are just so many other things to do that it's no surprise that many people go off and do their own thing. I don't know anything about NYU specifically, but why hang around school when Greenwich village & the meatpacking district are steps away, and Manhattan is at your fingertips.
