Hello,
I've appeared for GMAT on Aug 2025, my score was 585. I'm planning for my next attempt by May end. MSR has always been a pain area for me (except few types). Mainly I face difficulties with the MSR where a long passage with multiple conditions are given following one or more large dataset.
I've tries different tricks to skim read and deduce the gist and work on it but most of the under the time pressure, I panic and fail to deduce the necessary and end in the loop of finding the right way for the calculation.It is affecting my DI overall
1. If I invest way too much time and if get it correct, it is putting pressure on time for other questions.
2. Even if I do not focus much and maintain the time, most of the times these MSR questions has almost zero calculations which is leading me to lose sureshot corrects.
Can anyone please suggest some way to deal with this?

This is a common pain point on MSR, and what you described is more diagnostic than you might think. The skim-for-gist approach you have been trying is the wrong target.
Here is what is going on. The tabs are not designed to be understood as a unified passage. You are not supposed to read them once and walk away with a synthesized mental model of all the conditions and data. The tabs function as a reference document, and the question stems are what tell you which pieces of information you actually need. So if you are spending your initial read trying to deduce the gist, you are doing work the test is not asking you to do, and you are running out of working memory before the questions even start. That is the loop you are describing.
The approach that works is different in kind. On your first pass, your job is to learn the lay of the land, not to absorb content. You are figuring out what kind of information lives on each tab, how the tabs relate to each other (a memo plus a data table, a proposal plus a counter-proposal, a passage plus supporting data), and where specific categories of information sit within each tab. This initial scan should take 90 seconds to two minutes for a three-tab set. You are building a map, not memorizing details.
Then you go to the questions. Pull keywords from the question stem and the answer choices, and use those keywords to navigate back to the right tab and the right spot within the tab. Some statements require pulling from one tab, others require synthesizing across two or three. That is normal, and the upfront map is what makes the bouncing efficient. Filter aggressively as you go. MSR materials are deliberately overloaded with information, and a meaningful chunk is irrelevant to any specific question.
This directly explains the second pattern you flagged. When you skim without building the map, you miss the easier MSR questions because those questions are pure retrieval, where you find the right tab, find the detail, answer. If you do not know where the detail lives, you are forced to re-read tabs in real time under pressure, which is slow and triggers panic. Doing the upfront survey well means retrieval-style questions take 30 to 60 seconds, and you bank that time for the harder synthesis questions in the same set.
On pacing, the framework range for an MSR question is 2:15 to 3:00, but remember that an MSR set typically has two or three questions sharing the same upfront tab review. Plan around three minutes for the first question (which absorbs the survey) and closer to two minutes for each subsequent question. If a question is not opening up after about 2:30, make your best decision and move on.
To build this, do focused untimed MSR practice first. After every question, ask yourself: did I know where to look? Did I get pulled into irrelevant information? Did I miss a connection across tabs? That diagnosis is what trains the skill. Once your untimed accuracy is consistently strong, layer in timing.
Given your end-of-May timeline, spend focused 45-minute blocks on MSR for the next two weeks using this approach, and run a couple of timed DI sections in your final week to confirm the pacing works under pressure.
