Just got done taking my first GMAT and I'm pretty disappointed - I got a 640 (Q38, V40).
The good news: I am generally happy with my verbal score. I've been at or above 88-90th percentile on my practice tests, and the 40 on my actual exam places me in the 90th percentile. I'll definitely live with that.
The bad and the good: I made a major goof during the exam. Following the essay/integrated reasoning, I went outside to my car to get some fresh air and to grab a coffee I'd left in my car. When I buzzed myself back into the building (since the doors to the building were locked), I was greeted by one of the test center workers who told me my exam had to be suspended since I was not supposed to have left the building. I was totally shocked and crushed. It was my error, since I had failed to read that on the instruction sheet they passed to me before the test, but that certainly did not make me feel any better. To my good fortune, however, I was notified a few minutes later that the GMAT folks consented for me to finish the exam. HOWEVER, when I re-entered the test room, I was a bit thrown off since the screen indicated I only had 65 minutes left. This certainly only upped my already elevated stress level, and forced me to lose some focus and rush through several of the questions. The good news here is that I've learned my lesson and will NOT do this again.
The bad: Regardless of losing 10 minutes, my quant scores on practice tests have generally been well below where I would like them to be. I would like some advice on how to improve my Q score over the next two months.
Here are my practice exam tests:
1) 6/25/14 - GMATPREP1: 620 - Q36/V39
2) 7/09/14 - GMATPREP2: 680 - Q42/V40 (NOTE: saw a few of the same questions recycled - believe this may have artificially inflated my score)
3) 7/22/14 -
MGMAT 1: 640 - Q44/V33 (Verbal was insanely difficult)
4) 7/22/14 -
MGMAT 2: 650 - Q39/V39
5) 8/01/14 - Veritas Practice Test: 700 - Q44/V42 (seemed "too easy")
6) 8/02/14 - OFFICIAL GMAT 1: 640 - Q38/V40
As you can see, my verbal scores have generally been solid and consistent (minus the abomination on July 22nd). My quant scores have been less solid and less consistent though. Again, any advice or thoughts on improving quant? I used EmpowerGMAT for a few months and it definitely helped, but I'm still not where I want to be. I am looking to add 40+ points to my score (really want that 700+ though), so any/all help is much appreciated. And one final thing - which practice tests are the best/most accurate? Seems like the
MGMAT ones are harder than normal. The verbal section on the
MGMAT 1 was insane, and the math generally seems to be pretty challenging too. Is GMATPREP the best? And is it worth buying the extra practice test pack since I see a lot of recycled questions within the standard practice test module?
