I just took 4 of the 6
MGMAT CATs and am sorely disappointed with a large number of their questions. Thought I'd share my experience here and find out if anyone else felt the same.
To break this down a bit:
SCs - A large number of their SC's focus on the intended meaning of the author to identify the right answer. While meaning is definitely important I haven't seen this much emphasis on the meaning of a sentence in most of the GMATPrep SCs that I've done. It was really frustrating to attempt questions looking for grammatical mistakes, get those questions wrong, and then realize that the issue was not grammatical but more focused on meaning. I've browsed through the
MGMAT forums and the staff there give superb explanations to various SC problems and explore intricate concepts, however such concepts are barely tested at all.
CRs - Many of the CRs focus on minutae so small that when I read the explanation I felt like pounding the screen. I felt the CRs were really poor, and totally unrepresentative of the GMATPrep questions. Agreed, the questions are longer, tougher and require you to think more. However I felt that the answer choices were rather poorly constructed and the explanations for many were quite fickle.
RCs - Huge 70 liners that are really tough. Great workout. However the questions are sometimes CR type questions (infer, assume, etc) and the answer choices for these questions make the same mistakes as the CRs do(poorly thought out, other answer choices equally good).
Pros:Overall the tests are great prep material because the questions are pretty tough and will force you to work hard to get to the answers. The quant focuses heavily on number properties and the questions are definitely tougher than the GMATPrep questions. Verbal questions are longer and more complex than usual.
Cons:Total disappointment in the quality of the answer choices and answer explanations (of CRs). They focus heavily on minute and irrelevant details.
SCs are longer and tougher but obsessed with identifying the intended meaning of the author and hence deviate from the GMATPrep SCs. Also, the SCs do not have sufficient coverage of the various GMAT topics.
Overall:Great if you want tough timed CATs to fight with. The review options to identify where mistakes are made and where to improve helps a lot. The quant questions and answer explanations are very good. However the quality of the verbal answers and explanations is a major let down.
Please note: I love the
MGMAT SC guide and all the quant guides and I'm indebted to
MGMAT for a large number of SC concepts that I learnt there. However the tests were not up to the standard that I've come to expect from ManhattanGMAT. Also, whatever I've written above is based on my own experience only.
Just wanted to know if others have had a similar experience with the
MGMAT CATs and what they felt about the same.
