Hi ms4233,

it varies by b-school, but it is very common to run background checks after applications are submitted and typically only for admitted students.

This means that your undergrad school might get a call some time. However, most of the times they only check dates, degree earned, grades, etc... Whether your school will disclose disciplinary warnings it is uncertain (some countries regulate the info that can be shared to third parties).

Just to be sure, you might want to call your school and ask about how much they disclose in background checks.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello,

When I was a sophomore in college (I am 24 now), I received two disciplinary warnings for "disrespecting a member of the community." Basically, I got into verbal altercations, and the other person reported it. Suffice to say, I am a lot less confrontational now than I was at that age. There is no indication of anything on my academic record, and there were no concrete disciplinary actions taken beyond the warnings.

Is this something that would ever come up in a B-school application? If so, how should I address it? Thanks.

Hi ms4233,

Schools usually run a background check and it would be best to check with your undergrad school what sort of information they would reveal. Besides this, frankly, the business school will not have any other way of cross-checking this piece of information (particularly because this is not mentioned anywhere in your transcripts).

All the best!

Hey ms4233
Thanks for posting. OK, lots to think about here. Firstly, call your school and ask them how/if they would report on this during a background check. Then, many of the applications you complete may ask a question like, "Have you ever been put on academic or disciplinary probation? If s, please explain." So the other thing you will need to do here is look at all the apps and see exactly what they are asking. (Usually this is towards the end of the app close to the honor code.) If your incidents don't fit what the MBA program is asking, you're in the clear. So it's really going to depend on the intersection of how the school classified these two incidents and what the applications ask for. Hope that helps.
