The difficulty level of the GMAT exam and the score goes down substantially if you answer easy questions incorrectly while attempting first 10 questions.

Hi, guys.

I've just taken an official GMAT mock test (from MBA website) and I've scored 650 (Q45,V34).

I don't understand how i could have take V34 since my correct answers were 28 out of 36.

I know that the system is adaptive.

Do you think that the problem is that i've missed to much questions in the first 10?

Could you please help me to understand why?

Probably fair to say that a V34 is not based on a strict percentage correct vs. incorrect system. May be worth checking out some of the publicly available ESRs. Consider reading the myth vs. fact info sections in the beginning of the Official-Guide. You may come away thinking the first 10 questions are not AS important as before.

How to get a V40 or higher on the GMAT? What about a V51?

[quote="MartyTargetTestPrep"]Hi spaccaginav.

GMAT verbal is scored differently from quant. In quant, you can miss 8 questions and score in the upper 40s.

In verbal, missing 8 questions will result in your scoring in the low 40s max, and often results in a score in the 30s.

In your case, your missing relatively easy questions toward the beginning of the verbal section dragged the difficulty level of the entire section down, with the result that you scored V34, rather than in the upper 30s or low 40s, with 8 missed questions.

For some ideas you can use to increase your verbal score, see this post.

Thank you for your answer.

1) So if my answers pattern would have been the contrary (the 36th question the 1st), do you think I would taken more?

2) the test is adaptive that means that before you have all the easiest question and then the hardest or it depends if your response is correct or incorrect.

thank you.

You would probably have scored a little higher with the reverse pattern, but not that much higher since you missed some questions toward the end of the test.

The difficulty starts off at medium, or in the middle of the range, and then increases or decreases depending on whether you get questions incorrect or correct.

Hi spaccaginav

For scoring 700 and above, you need to make sure you don’t get the easy & medium questions wrong as GMAT test is adaptive in nature. For that, being conceptually clear on all topics is really vital. Not only this, you have to be good with application of concepts also, because GMAT is a test of application of concepts.

Here's a video where we have taken some case studies (somewhat similar to yours) to understand how the Algorithm really works, how to analyse GMAT ESRs (Enhanced Score Reports), and what is the right test taking strategy for GMAT Quant & GMAT Verbal:
