I recently scored a 720 with a 49Q and 38V.
I have heard of people scoring 710 with the same split, and I have heard of people only scoring 10 points higher (730) with 49Q and 42V.
Anyone know how the GMAT determines differences in overall scores between identical splits?
I'm not complaining, because I would've predicted 49Q/38V to be closer to 710

Here is a good representation of the relationship between raw and final scores: gmat-score-guide-to-gmat-scores-score-reports-83890.html
I have 49, 42 and it is 750 - not 730. I have heard of people getting 50, 42 and getting 750 as well, but most of the time 50 42 is 760.
There are some "discrepancies" but more likely "high" and "lows" as shadowsjc explained it recently. Since GMAT comes in 10-point increments, it probably makes sense that sometimes the same raw score may yield a different final score.
P.S. Was that on the GMAT of GMAT Prep?
If that's on another test provider software, then it goes out of the window - they have their own scales that sometimes don't match up with real GMAT.
