Hello There!
So I joined an IP company (start-up) in 2016 as an associate research analyst and later got promoted to a Research Analyst. In 2017, I got an opportunity to start building and managing content for our company as my writing skills were good. I even ended up creating content for the founders of the company to present on international platforms. During this time I was working 50%-50% i.e. half time contributed to my research work and half of the time to manage content for the company. I was the only one managing content for the company and to get proficient in it I also did a few online courses on Content Marketing and Digital Marketing. That's how I developed interest in the Business aspect of things and I decided to prepare for GMAT.
As 2017 approached to an end, I was shifted back to Research work as the company required more experienced resources to handle the increasing workload. In May,2018 I had taken study leave to study for the GMAT and I rejoined office in November 2018. I have been recently offered an opportunity to work in our company's 7 month old Research and Development wing which currently has 4 members.
This is where my dilemma is. I'am interested to get as close as possible to the business side of our company. My research work is very monotonous and even the ones promoted have to do the same work without much managerial and leadership exposure. All our seniors have to do is allot projects and check our reports. thats it. There are no real leadership qualities inculcated in the ones promoted. At max one has to manage 1-3 persons, but the work is the same : Keep an eye on our progress and check reports! (which is not a mammoth task here..)
Some people have really scared me in the past saying that you are spoiling your career path...which means that you should not experiment with different job opportunities...But my heart knows that whatever I did was with a sole intention of expanding my skill set and getting a hang of the business world as that's where I see myself in the future. The research work that I do currently completely alienates me from the business wing and I feel that getting out of it is the only way to shape myself for a good bschool.
So I'am not interested in the research work and I'am thinking to join the R&D work, where I would be given a team of coders and I would have design algorithms to build new modules for our company's product. I feel this would give more exposure because of increased responsibility and help me reconnect to the business side.
Can you please guide me on this. Should I go ahead with opting for R&D? How will such diverse career path effect my bschool application? Also, despite having received so many rare opportunities in the company and received appreciation for my work, I haven't received any official recognition or awards. (What about office politics? We all know that especially in small companies, recognition is not always fair.....). How will this affect my application?
Thanks for keeping up till the end!
