The way many recruiters for professional jobs do? Should one cleanse/prepare one's presences on various social-networking websites before applying to business schools?

Prob not. I keep it clean anyway. Or at the very least private. Honestly why would u let anyone just see your info?

One thing to consider is that make sure you use a professional looking/sounding email address in your resume or application.

Unlike something like "smashedntrashed@woohoo.com"

Agree with jordanhendrix. If you take a site like Facebook, for instance, I only let people see my profile picture ('cos you don't really have a choice with this one) - so I keep that one like .... normal, and that's it. There's an option to send me a message or add me as a friend, and I usually don't add people I don't know personally.

I'd also add to make sure your linkedin.com profile is congruent with your resume. While adcoms might not look at it, it may not look right if your resume says something totally different than linkedin.
