Malcolm Gladwell talked a bit about affirmative action in his latest book, "David and Goliath," that I think was very spot on.

Regardless of whether or not affirmative action is fair to the applicants who were rejected because of it, I do believe that it strongly enriches the experiences of all the admitted students. Having a diverse learning environment that benefits the students should continue to be a higher priority than having a subjectively "fair" admissions process. After all, it's an institution of learning, not an institution of admissions. It is an unfortunate side effect that affirmative action tends to promote the negative stereotypes that prompted its creation in the first place.

This is an interesting question, and to give my opinion as a former admissions interviewer I can say that I honestly never took gender into consideration. I was interested in what was on the page - the essays, the resume, the scores. I wanted to see that someone had truly done impressive work, and seemed to have the potential to be a future leader in the field. People doing exceptional things that made them stand out. Speaking from my own experience, gender was never an issue.

Females definitely have an edge in MBA admissions. Especially in the current climate. Look at the recent events at the White House where business school deans came together to announce a plan to improve female opportunities at business school. Look at programs like the Forte Foundation which will help prepare females and then offers scholarships to many. Recruiters want diverse classes so that is what business schools will put together. It is also good for the students because they will get diverse opinions in the classroom. We will all be better off with more diversity.
