Hi All,
I hope y'all are doing good
. Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I am thinking of getting an MBA soon, but wanted to make sure I really need an MBA.
BACKGROUND:
BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA (graduated in 2006, GPA 3.7/4.0)
MS in Electrical Engineering from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA (graduated in 2008, GPA 3.5/4.0)
PhD in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (graduated in 2015, GPA 3.52/4.0)
I worked on my PhD while I was employed full-time, that is why I have a PhD and 7 years of experience at 31 years of age.
I have 7 years of industry experience (individual contributor, scientist, manager etc..) where I designed, managed and delivered state of the art products in aerospace, defense and satellite communication industries. I have also collaborated with US Army research Laboratory that lead to my PhD research (published 20+ publications in conferences and journals).
GOALS
I am almost at the top of my technical field at the moment where I work, and I want to learn everything about business side of things in my industry and better assist my customers (I have done business development work in the past that led to multiple multi-million dollar contractors with big defense contractors), so that led to me thinking about an MBA. Are my goals in-line with what an MBA teaches?
Is there anything I need to consider, or need to be aware of? I am not looking into an MBA for money, because I can achieve that with work experience with a PhD.

You pose an interesting question. In the broad sense, considering your work history and Advanced degrees, do you really "need" an MBA to accomplish this next set of goals? As a critical thinking 'experiment', my guess is that the answer is probably 'no', but there will certainly be aspects to your job (and future work-related experiences) that you can't possibly elaborate on in these forums. There is also the pride that comes with having earned an MBA.
From a practical standpoint, I would look to any MBA holders that YOU interact with (on any level) as part of the work that you currently do. Those people might be the ones that could provide greater perspective on your situation and the value that having an MBA would provide.

Thank you for your reply. I have interacted with directors and VPs at where I work and asked them this question, and I got mixed reviews at best. Some think MBA in finance (not marketing) is the way to go, others said general MBA is the way to go and a few said I don't need an MBA. I work for a multi-national corporation, which promotes talent. I want to take advantage of that and propel myself forward. My thinking is MBA won't hurt and might help me with my next promotion. What say?
