I think it depends on whether you have a legitimate reason for the poor grades. Was there an extenuating circumstance (death, illness, working multiple jobs, etc)? Or were you just busy drinking all through your freshman year?
Not that there is anything wrong with the latter, but if that's the case I don't think trying to spin it would be a good idea. However, if there was a legitimate excuse, I think it can only help to explain why your GPA isn't higher. I've heard from multiple adcoms that if they don't see an explanation of something major like low GPA/GMAT or no recommendation from current employer, they'll start thinking about all the reasons why. At least one of those isn't going to be good and you don't want them to be coming to poor conclusions.

Well, a 3.15 gpa is definitely a red flag for a school like HBS and Sloan. Though the schools will analyze your transcript, I think it always pays to play offense and point out a positive trend or other circumstances. Some folks hold down a part time job, some folks are coming from a less challenging public school environment and need to adjust to college, some folks have to deal with mono and other typical college maladies:)
So sure, if there is something to add then spend some time detailing the background. But don't go on and on, and don't moan excessively. Make is short and simple, and ultimately, take responsibility.
