I graduated with 3.02. I used the optional essay to explain it. My opinion is that they're going to see it, so don't let them fill in the holes with their own speculation; tell them what happened. Keep it short and upbeat, though, you don't want them to dwell on it. I wrote three sentences to explain it.

However, I haven't received an invite and will probably get rejected on Wednesday, so....

You definitely need to explain that. I have worked with folks who have poor GPAs around that but to get an interview, we explained it in the optional essay and made up for the GPA elsewhere.

I would definitely explain your GPA. Fortunately for you it seems you have some ammunition with a strong GMAT which should help substantiate your aptitude. I would make sure to own whatever issue caused it even if it is immaturity and lean on your performance since as an example of the "real you"
